Quast 18 Division Flensburg Gen.Lt. Frhr. v. Lüttwitz 18. Kav.Brig. Altona Gen.Maj. v. Heydebreck Garnison: Wandsbek Chef des Regiments: I.M. Königin Wilhelmina der Niederlande Kdr. Des Regiments: Oberstlt. Frhr. v. Hoverbeck gen. v. Schoenaich Stiftungstag des Regiments: 19. Dezember 1803 Errichtung: Am 19. Husaren-Regiment in Königs-Husaren-Regiment umbenannt. Durch A.K.O. vom 27. Durch A.K.O. vom 2. Durch A.K.O. vom 24.
On the 19th December 1803 a 1st and 2nd Husaren-Regiment was formed during the reign of King George III. of England from the former Hannoverian soldiers of the Kings’s German Legion, which units are considered the ancestral predecessors of the Regiment. The legion was dissolved in 1815. On the 25th February 1816 both regiments were taken into Hannoverian services. The 1st Husaren-Regt. received the title Garde-Husaren-Regiment with Hannover as a garrison, the second regiment went to Osnabrück. In 1830 the second regiment was named “Königs-Husaren-Regiment”. In 1833 the Garde-Husaren were united with the Königs-Ulanen zu form a “Königs-Dragoner-Regiment” in the garrison of Verden. The Königs-Husaren formed together with the Cumberland-Ulanen the “Königin-Dragoner-Regiment” in Osnabrück. In 1838 the status reverted to the state previous to 1833. After the campaign against Austria in 1866 and the annexation of Hannover by Prussia, many of the Hannoverian officers went into Prussian services. By A.K.O. of 27th September 1866 two squadrons of the Westphalian Husaren-Regimenter 8 and 11 were ordered to form a new regiment with 4 squadrons. By A.K.O. of 2nd October 1866 the regiment received the title “Husaren-Regiment No.15”, which was changed to Hannoversches Husaren-Regiment No.15” on 7th November 1867. The regiment took up quarters in Düsseldorf on 11th October 1867. After the return ot the regiment from the war of 1871, the regiment moved into it’s new garrison Wandsbek. On 31st August 1898 the regiment received it’s final title after it’s new honorary commander in chief, “Husaren-Regiment Königin Wilhelmina der Niederlande (Hannoversches) No.15” By A.K.O. (highest cabinet order) of 24th January 1899 the tradition of the regiment was officially laid down as to the former Hannoverian 1st and 2nd Husaren-Regimenter, and the date of establishment as per 19th December 1803. Campaigns The orginal troops of the 1st and 2nd Husaren-Regt. within the King’s German Legion saw action against Denmark, the city of Copenhagen fell on 6th December 1807. In 1808 Spain and Portugal rose up against Napoleon. The Husar Regiments were sent by England to help against Napoleon and remained on the Iberian Peninsula till April 1814, taking part in various battles and skirmishes, after which they served in the occupation of the Netherlands. On 18th June 1815 the 1st Husaren-Regiment took part in the Battle of Waterloo under the command of Wellington. Durng the campaign against Austria in 1866, Hannover sided with the southern German states on the side of Austria and against Prussia. The Hannoverian troops were forced to capitulate after the battle of Langensalza on 29th June 1866. The Hannoverian army then ceased to exist. During the campaign against France in 1870/71 the Prussian Husaren-Regiment No.15 fought at Spichern and Gravelotte and took part in the encirclement of Metz in November 1870. The regiment was then involved in pushing the French army back and preventing it’s crossing of the Swiss frontier. At the end of 1871 the victorious Regiment entered it’s new garrison Wandsbek. Uniform: Dark blue Attila (tunic), white trim, Kolpak lemon-yellow. Cape with black fur trim, for officers, white. On the shoulder cords were the white metal cyphers of a gothic W with a crown. On the fur busby was a scroll with the battle honours: “Peninsula-Waterloo-El.Bodon-Barossa” World War 1914-18 The Regiment moved forward as a Brigade together with Husaren-Regiment 16 nto Belgium, and pushed over the Marne through France. After the retreat at the beginning of September 1914, it went to Flanders to expand the right flank of the army to the coast. The Husars served als riders and dismounted in the trenches. At the end of November the Regiment was transferred to the East and saw service in Russian-Poland. In February 1915 it took part in the winter battle of Masuren, after which it was transferred to Lithuania and Kurland. In 1917 the Regiment saw service in action against partisan activity in the rear areas. In July 1917 it was sent to help the Austrians against the Russian major offensive in East Galicia. Mid 1918 single squadrons of the Regiment served in the rear areas in policing and security duties in Rumania. The Regiment was afterwards transferred to Minsk, carrying out the same duties as previously till the end of the war. On the 30th January 1919 the Regiment arrived back in Wandsbek, where the demobilisation and dissolution of the Regiment began. On the 1st April 1919 however, a new squadron was raised in order to put down the revolts and unrest in Hamburg. The remainder of the former regiment came later to Reichswehr-Kavallerie-Regiment 9 and finally to Reiter-Regiment 14. The tradition of the regiment was maintained by 1st Squadron of Reiter-Regiment No.14 in Ludwigslust. Literature: Geschichte des Husaren-Regiments Nr.15, Wandsbek 1905 Husaren heraus! Von E. Fritz
Here are some pictures I took a few years ago in Wandsbek (near Hamburg). They are from a private display within a home for the elderly. The home is called Domizil zum Husaren, and is situated on the Juthornstrasse between the former regimental barracks and the exercise grounds (Exerzierplatz). The selection is very small but certainly unique and is displayed in a large showcase in the floor below the reception on the ground floor. Anyone can visit at any time, just ask at the reception if you are ever visiting in Hamburg. The items have been several times on loan in various displays and exhibitions locally in the past decade. The first picture shows two uniform jackets (Attilas) from the regiment, on the left, an Unteroffizier version, on the right is the tunic of a major, and I am convinced, this was the tunic of the last peacetime Adjutant of the regiment, Major Freiherr von Tettau (whose cap I have in my collection. The tunic is complete with the barrel sash, which has been wrongly fitted over the tunic with the sword belt, which was always worn under the tunic! In the back of the showcase are two lances with pennants, one for an NCO (heraldic eagle) and one for other ranks Apart from that are also two cavalry swords. The next pic. is of the Majors tunic, and the third shows his decorations, not sure, however, if they originally belonged to the tunic wearer. They are: The Red Eagle Order 4th class, the Kriegshilfsdienst cross, cross for 1866 and the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Memorial-Medal 1897 (Gedächtnis-Medaille). Apart from this, there is another small museum in Wandsbek, The Wandsbeker Heimatmuseum, which has one whole room devoted to the history of the regiments, with three and a half full figures in uniform, including the rare fieldgrey Attila for a Wachtmeister. This collection was carefully put together under the expertise of Hans-Werner Faerber, an ex-Bundeswehr officer, now retired and living in Goslar, and at much expense. This together with many other original souvenirs, unique photos and documents make this collection, probably the only one of its kind. The original collection in a larger house was destroyed in the bombing in July 1943, but since re-established in the postwar years with the help of donations from private sources. The museum is open on Tuesday afternoons and on the first Sunday of the month. Opening hours can be seen in the internet page of the Bürgerverein Wandsbek under the museum section.
Fritz
And here is an old comrade's badge (Zivilnadel) for former members of the regiment. It is nicely designed, using the form of a rosette, as found on a Husar's tunic (one of 10) with the shoulder strap monogram of Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands. It is difficult to date this item, probably after WW1 and maybe even postwar. Could theoretically have been worn up to when the last member of the regiment died. One of the last was Hans Dose, who served 1914-18 and was featured in a local newspaper, being over 100 at the time, I think that was around 1997. There is an identical example of this in the local museum, and may be considered rare. This was purchased a couple of years ago from a well known Hamburg Militaria store. There were also various other designs of badge, in enamels, The former Association was known as Husaren Kameradschaft Wandsbek, and existed certainly till the late 1970s and was then taken over by the Bürgerverein Wandsbek, and also by the local Bundeswehr in the Helmut-Schmidt-Universität, Douamont-Kaserne. Each year on Volkstrauertag, a Sunday in November, wreaths are laid before the memorial, at least until recently. A new directive has now been brought out by Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen has officially stopped all such ceremonies in the future. Fritz
In this villa in Wandsbek, in the Schloss Strasse was the residence of the Veterinary Surgeon (Rossarzt) of the regiment. There is a horse's head above the entrance of the small building in the middle, slightly visible between the trees. Here, another better picture.
Fritz
Photos from 2.11.2016 showing damage to statue and plinthe, due to weathering and also vandalism. The scabbard of the sword is missing from the right side, the points of the spurs are missing, and the hand strap of the lance has detached and slid further down. Some of these points were restored some years ago, but since re-occured. The house in the last illustration was part of the original barracks from 1893, reused after 1933. This building is one of the few originals left of the old complex. Further pictures are were taken several years earlier.
Fritz
Further exhibits - 2 fur caps ( Busby or Pelzmütze) of Husaren-Regiment 15, various details. An officer peaked cap from Leutnant der Reserve Goos (name written into liner), and a rolled silver cord cap-lines for an officer's fur cap. There should be a Reserve cockade on capband, instead is the normal regular Prussian cockade. Note the battle scrolls: Peninsula - Waterloo - El Bodon - Barossa. Both caps are of different fur materials, the one looks like black bearskin, the other example is possibly of brown foalskin, blackened. The regulation stated:- black sealskin; private purchase items at variance were tolerated. Extremely rare items.
Buster
Those are beautiful items you have Fritz, what is the gorget in the background of the third picture?
Fritz
These are in fact, not mine, but belong to the local museum., which has a section devoted to this regiment, which was stationed here. I am at the moment responsable for the maintenance and "restoration", etc. The Gorgette or "Ringkragen" was worn by the Standardbearer of the Husaren-Verein, the Association of former members of the Regiment, we also found the little shaped fitted carton to go with it, in the loft, and now in one of the glass cases. This item was probably worn till the mid-1970s - or last get-togethers in Uniform were around 1982 (!) The last Husar was Hans Dose, who at the age of 100 appeared in the local newspaper in 1997. I see later, that he died in Summer 1999, over the age of 101.
Fritz
Here is an illustration of an example of an other ranks' private purchase greatcoat in luxury quality for a One-Year-Volunteer as Unteroffizier (H.R.15). The material is of officer quality, however officers never wore collar patches, and their coats were double-breasted with a coloured collar, usually midblue, but could vary as per regiment. All other ranks and nco greatcoats had plain coloured collar patches, usually in the regimental colour, for infantry - red, artillery - black, this example has the set Unteroffizier braid on each patch. etc. Shoulder cords were not worn on the greatcoat, but rather shoulder straps in the colour of the tunic, wth usually a red monogram or number - these are here edged with the special cord for one year volunteers. The plain shoulder button has no squadron number in this case. This example shows a silk lining with the decorative embroidered monogram of the wearer. This coat is depicted in the standard work by Jürgen Krauss, Die Deutsche Armee im Ersten Weltkrieg, which has also been published in English, and most material is in the posession of the Bayerische Armeemuseum in Ingolstadt, the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum in Vienna or the Armeemuseum in Dresden.
Fritz
Further photos of Memorial added and an image of a post-WW1 postcard based on a water-colour by Döbrich-Steglitz, depicts a Winter scene excercising with the Lance on the areal of the barracks in Wandsbek-Marienthal before WW1. In the background are stalls for the horses, and this complex was built in a U or horseshoe form. Some of these buildings, including the large riding hall, still exist and have been converted into appartments and a shopping centre N.B.: Erich R. Döbrich, lived up till 1939 in Berlin-Steglitz, he died during the Battle of Berlin, April-May 1945. No further details of his fate are known.

Fritz
A postcard I got earlier this year: The card is franked and stamped, Wandsbek, 13.12.1913 to an address in Neukalen/Mecklenburg, which would date it at around this time. Husars returning from the riding place, led by an officer and an nco, presumably a Wachtmeister. Note the lance penants in the column in the background. The officer is wearing the Interimsattila and peaked cap.
Fritz
Another amazing discovery (internet) of an Ersatz headdress around 1915/16 for Husaren-Regiment 15, fieldgrey. Missing is the Feldzeichen (large black-white cockade) over the front, which was removed anyway for field service. Extremely unusual. One of the many variations that were tried out. Felt variations are also known. This would have been worn without the yellow Kolpak. There are apparently also no attachments for the caplines (Fangschnur). The outward appearance is like the headdress as worn with a field cover, but with the emblem visible. A further example made of felt, this has a white metal scroll, the chinstrap has fieldgrey fitting. Closeup
Fritz
Studio photo as a so called Kabinettfoto from Fotoatelier J. Harländer, Wandsbeker Chausse 195 (Wandsbek), although it states Hamburg A Husar from Husaren-Regiment 15, which may be dated between 1890 and March 1897 - The cap has no Reichskokarde, which was introduced on 22. March 1897, he is already wearing the Kavallerie-Degen M.1889, the older version with a scabbard bearing two suspension rings and with a bright finish. The tunic and cap form are also of the old-fashioned variety, Husar depicted has not yet been identified. A Feldpostkarte, sketch by P. Boeisen (?) dated 1915, shows a grave for six members of the regiment, titled: "Heldengrab in Grajewo" and "Hier ruhen 6 Husaren, Regt.15" This was on the Eastern Front. Names shown on the cross are: Sgt. Damann, V. Esk. Gefr. Schulze, V. Esk. Gem. Thies, II. Esk Gem. Kalsmann, IV. Esk. Gem. Wunnenberg, IV. Esk. Gem. Kastec., IV. Esk. The abreviation "Gem." stands for Gemeiner (lowest rank, as private - for all branches of service)

Fritz
Here is a better picture of the house of the Regimental veterinary, Julius Gutzeit, built 1869 and still in good order, you can see the horse's head to the front.

Fritz
An old postcard from the series by Verlag A. Büttner, published around 1913, and with postdate 1915 depicting a column of Husars from Husaren-Regiment 15 passing along the Jüthornstrasse in Wandsbek-Marienthal. The street is today widened and quite busy with traffic. Some of the villas still remain. This part of Wandsbek is still very picturesque till the present day.
Fritz
Hoping this card will arrive some time this week. The Town of Wandsbek also had a partnership several years ago with the London Borough of Leyton (London, E10). This was run by Rolf Maekel of Wandsbek along with English members in the London Borough of Leyton. This ran for quite some time. But Rolf Maekel, who also wrote quite a few books on local history, passed on a few years ago, and I believe, the Wandsbek-Leyton Association is no longer existing, as they probably could not find any younger successors to take over. Bürgervereinigung Wandsbek-Leyton e.V. - was, I believe, the official name for it over here. Card has now arrived, as usual difficult to decypher the handwritten script - was sent from Wandsbek to an address in Braak near Stapelfeld, which is between Wandsbek and Lübeck.

Fritz
This postcard from the same series, is Feldpost postdated August 1917 to an Adress in Rostock. Depicted is the Marienanlage in Marienthal. Two husars with lances, was an everyday sight in Wandsbek. The barracks were nearby and further to the east were the grounds where they exercised - Wandsbeker Gehölz, etc. The railway station was also nearby. Almost the same spot today? This is the corner at Kurvenstrasse 44 / Am Husarendenkmal 33 - possibly part of the Marienanlage before the new dividing street was built. The hotel on the corner was rebuilt after the war.
