family medals

Hi guys. After much soul searching and talks with Graeme i have decided to move onto Brit medals.

This came around after a quirk of fate.

I came across a ww1 pair to a W.K.Penman of the Royal Engineers.

Now Penman is my wifes maiden name and i imediatly wondered if they were related.

I put in a winning bid and received the medals and the research began.

I found out that the guy is related to the wifes family.

Below is a short summery of information that was given.

I have now managed to get a collection of 7 medals, one of which is a casualty , so far.I managed to receive a good price on my DDR stuff.

Thanks

david F

Huzzah!!!!!!!! My drunken ramblings helped then.

Always said 'better dead than red' :D :D

What a cracking pair to get. It's not often you pick up family medals. I have been searching for years now and never found my Grandfather's or great grandfathers medals. Still I live in hope. You did very well with that find. :D :D

Have you checked for Service Papers yet. If not let me have his Number and any others you want checking (Name, Nr and Reg)

Hi Graeme.Yip,your drunken ramblings helped.

I normally go through e bay but this is the first time i have come across any medals named to anyone called Penman.

A stroke of luck or devine intervention, you decide ;)

So far i have the following

A.2.Cpl W.K.Penman number 2299 Royal Engineers-no papers yet

SS112742 Festus Whalean(yip, thats his name)St01 Royal Navy.I have his service papers .I only bought this because he was born in Ayr.I only have his Victory medal

Cpl J A Bruckshaw,97357,Royal Artillery.victory medal only

Dvr A Smith ,94042,Royal Artillery Victory medal only

Dvr J Partington L6938 Royal Field Artillery 1914-15 star only

and i am awaiting the arrival of

Dvr H H Pell,640592,Royal Artillery Killed 27/05/1918,buried at GWALIA CEMETERY in Belgium.Victory medal only

Not a bad start i think.

I'm going to go for Royal artillery and Royal engineers.

I paid £32 including postage for the Penman medals and £17 for the Whalean one with service papers.

I paid around £12-£14 for the other singles and £15 for te 1914-15 star.

Now i don't think i'm paying over the odds for the medals but any help would be appreciated

well done Dave bit of a miracle you found a relative  glad to hear you finally kicked the DDR habit :D but at least you enjoyed collecting it which is the most important thing :) My next door neighbour was called Mrs Penman :o Those prices seem quite reasonable but as always watch out for renamed medals and broken groups as these factors will effect value

I am not bad with Army Records but Navy ones are a whole different ballgame.

However, ignorance has never stopped me in the past:

Ships Served In

Vivid II - Royal Naval Barracks in Devonport

HMS Leander - Built in 1882 as a Cruiser. Converted to a Destroyer 1902-1904. I believe she was a Depot ship for Destroyers during WWI.

HMS Roxburgh - Built London and Glasgow, Glasgow, laid down June 1902, completed September 1905.

3rd Cruiser Squadron Grand Fleet.

6 August 1914 Captured German merchant ship.

20 June 1915 Damaged by torpedo from German submarine U39.

April 1916 Operated in Norwegian waters.

1916 West Indies and North America Station.

24 May 1917 Escorted first convoy from Hampton Roads, Virginia.

12 February 1918 Rammed and sank German submarine U89 off Northern Ireland.

1921 Sold for scrap.

HMS Blake - As HMS Leander.

If you check the dates you may find your man saw some action while with the Roxburgh.

He was a Stoker 2nd Class.

He served a total of 21 days in the cells!!!!

Hope this helps to start with.
