After the occupation of the Ukraine by the German army, it was said that Andreas' father was called up by the Waffen-SS,
no further details known.
After the Summer of 1944 the German army was on the retreat, followed by many Russland Deutsche to avoid death or reprisals
by the Soviets. The family fled with many others from their area, via Poland. Andreas' mother told that when they were staying overnight at a farm, they were warned by locals in Polish to hide during the night. The partisans came, and it was said that they shot the Gutsverwalter under the window of the house, where Andreas' mother was staying.
They finally reached German territory and settled in Fallersleben, where a house was built post-war, still in possession of the family today. The two brothers Andreas and Adolf left for Canada in the late 1950s or early 1960s. Andreas stayed for five years, working for VW and later on a ranch as a cattle hand. His brother founded a building firm, still going today. Andreas returned to Germany after five years, and started studies in the university of Hamburg, studying English, Germanistik, etc. He later worked as a freelance interpretor and translator.  He has since travelled a lot, diving in the Red Sea and in the Mediterranean.

and a further signature below (illegible)
