Fritz Posted November 12, 2022 Posted November 12, 2022 The year is 1915, 25 part series with good flying scenes (1977/78) 3 Quote
72 usmc Posted November 12, 2022 Posted November 12, 2022 Does anyone know if this TV series from 1977-1978 is British? Does this TV series exist on a DVD set with all 25 episodes? If so, does anyone know who offers such a DVD set for sale? Does any one have any back ground information on its production? Thank You. I think I found it as a BBC British production ona region 2 PAL DVD. This will not play on US DVD players. Bummer. It is a 7 disc set 21 hours. The complete play list is in the upper right corner. I never knew about this series. Thanks This must be the series from 1977. see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wings_(British_TV_series) added it appears a new bluray region free DVD player is only $125. How times have changed. Since i do not have a player I guess its time so I can order the set 3 Quote
72 usmc Posted November 12, 2022 Posted November 12, 2022 another nice one hour TV program in the US was called Flying Coffins and was on the TV in 2005 on the Discovery/Military channel. It is also on DVD. This showed real planes and traced the development in WWI aviation. I only have a VHS tape. see https://docuwiki.net/index.php?title=Flying_coffins_-_the_first_world_war_in_the_air Here it is on You tube 3 Quote
Fritz Posted November 13, 2022 Author Posted November 13, 2022 I think you could try and download the series from Youtube, shouldn't be difficult. If that doesn't work, at least you have the Youtube link for a long time. Otherwise you could get in touch with the BBC in London, I'm sure they could help. 2 Quote
Fritz Posted November 13, 2022 Author Posted November 13, 2022 A restart of the series, set in 1939 2 Quote
72 usmc Posted November 15, 2022 Posted November 15, 2022 Thanks that 3 disc set is out in the US, non pal. I ordered it Piece of cake. 3 Quote
Kenny Andrew Posted December 4, 2022 Posted December 4, 2022 USMC I believe if you buy a region free Blu ray player you don't need to worry about the format, they are actually quite cheap now I got mine for under £50 and it plays US discs without any problems. The 70's had some great British TV shows, this was one of my favourites and is available on DVD. It tells the story of a young Royal Engineer Officer who finds himself posted to a Bomb Disposal Company to combat the hundreds of unexploded bombs in London, it has a great cast too. 2 Quote
72 usmc Posted December 4, 2022 Posted December 4, 2022 I just ordered Danger UXB at ebay for $14 $ dvd edition used. 3 Quote
Kenny Andrew Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 Excellent USMC, let us know what you think of it. Here is another 70's British classic Secret Army but at 43 episodes it will take a while to watch. I have it on DVD and is still on my "to watch" list but highly recommended. I watched it first time round in the 70's. 2 Quote
72 usmc Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 Both dvd sets finally arrived and I watched UXB, the first disc last night. They remind me of the old US Combat series where a guest actor dies in each episode. Some crazy British gals. Tonight I watch the first disc of Piece of cake... In the U. S. on B&W Tv back in 1962 to 1967, this was something to watch. It was about a US Army squad over in Germany. This ran 5 years while I was in high school. Sort of expensive at $50 a set and you never see it used at yard sales because it was originally like $129-199 a set when it first came out--too high priced for most. This is a forty disc set covering all 152 TV episodes. I got the BEST of... sets: These are around for about $4 and include THE BEST OF THE ... squade, color episodes, new replacements (always got killed off) and then The Best of Sanders, and Hanley. 3 Quote
72 usmc Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 I watched episode 1 &2 last night . A little slow starting and only training views of the spitfires, but amazing airplane footage. Like being at an air show. I wish I had this DVD in 4K to view the planes. I assume the combat footage comes in at later episodes. It kind of reminds me of our Ba Ba Black sheep TV series, but the plane footage is much better in the PIECE OF CAKE program. Both David Niven in Spitfire and Michael Cain in the Battle of Britain are great movies. I have the series about the USMC squadron VMA 214 called the Blacksheep. It was a U.S. TV program around 1975-1976 sort of an action and comedy program. 3 Quote
72 usmc Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 So a question, what is better, a Piece of Cake or Wings? I guess I have to order Wings now.... 3 Quote
Fritz Posted December 15, 2022 Author Posted December 15, 2022 A piece of cake is recommendable, WW1 Royal Flying Corps series 2 Quote
72 usmc Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 Ok I got to the last two episodes 5 and 6 and the action picks up and is good. Well worth watching and buying if someone has not seen this set. I am going to view 4,5,6 again. Some great plane views and interesting character development. Too bad this is not made in 4K. So good it ends too fast, and what a ending... 3 Quote
72 usmc Posted January 2, 2023 Posted January 2, 2023 Quote The credit for its technical authenticity goes to the film’s technical advisor Lieutenant Colonel Ernest Edward “E.E.” Gooch, Royal Engineers (Army Emergency Reserve) Retired. The stories are from Major Arthur Bamford "Bill or A.B.” Hartley, GM (George Medal), MBE (Most Excellent Order of the British Empire), Royal Engineers, 1959 book the Unexploded Bomb – A History of Bomb Disposal. The stories have been adapted for film by John Hawkesworth, Jeremy Paul, Don Shaw, Paul Wheeler, and Kenneth Clark. I just finished UXB 1979 and the later episode on the butterfly bomb was most interesting. UXB is well worth the price and view. I did not actually know about the butterfly bomb. How they moved them to blow up was interesting in the UXB series. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butterfly_Bomb Each episode has different bombs and generally one section member gets killed. This was an interesting BBC program. Well worth watching. One wonders how many EOD members were killed in Germany and England while attempting to defuse munitions. I remember in the Corps we had a week about mines , booby traps, and how to place claymores. I still got the boobytrap FM manual FM 2-31. And on a side note, Judy Gleeson is still a looker, she was in another favorite: To Sir, with love, 3 Quote
phantom Posted January 3, 2023 Posted January 3, 2023 Danger UXB is an awesome series, very brave men. I'm with you with Judy Gleeson too 'To sir with love' is a great film, great music too. 3 Quote
