Dave
A fantastic group!!! It's really good to see the man behind the medals and awards. Have you thought about researching him and the unit Stewy? What's the thing with the bullets on it?
stewy
A fantastic group!!! It's really good to see the man behind the medals and awards. Have you thought about researching him and the unit Stewy? What's the thing with the bullets on it? I know he was in Estonia in '44. The thing with the bullets,it's engraved but i can only think it's some sort of trench art. His passport has loads of entries. He must've been something to do with the new federal goverment type thing. I'll post the rest if you're interested. Stewy
Dave
Yes please. A very interesting group. It would be worth getting in touch with Bundesarciv to see if they have his military records. Otherwise there might be an old comrades association of his regiment or Division. Probably not many alte kampfers left but sometimes a son or family member has taken on the records. Graeme
This is with out a doubt the best German grouping I have seen. If I could have got my hands on things like this I would still be collecting german stuff. Absolutely superb. My biggest bugbear with german stuff was, unless you picked up groups like this, you never new the story. It's an Iron Cross. Who was it awarded to? What was it for? You could never tell as they were not named. British stuff was named. You can get the story and research out of it. It's not just a pretty bauble. That's why this grouping is the business. It is superb. The bullet thing is not trench art. I would guess it's well after 'trench time'. But important all the same. We have one in our family like this. It's a gold encrusted bullet broach. My great grandfather was shot in gallipoli but the bullet was in such a place that they couldn't get it out. Eventually it worked it's way through the body so that they pulled out it through his skin. My great grandmother then had the bullet encased in gold and made into a broach.
