A popular picture in a quality resembling a photo. This depicts the Kaiser in Generals Uniform in a room of one of the royal palaces, inspecting three of his sons in uniform, Princes of the Royal Household, from left to right, Kronprinz Friedrich Wilhelm, Prinz Adalbert and Prinz Eitel-Friedrich. The princes are wearing the summer full dress uniform of a Seonde-Lieutenant (Leutnant) of the First Foot Guards in Potsdam - Erstes Garde-Regiment-zu-Fuss.

The card bears the text: "Zu Befehl, Majestät!" To the lower left corner is the initials of the artist and date of 1894. The age of the princes would have been between 10-12 years at the time.

N:B.: Seconde-Lieutenant, Premier-Lieutenant, etc. were used in the 19th Century until about 1900. In the early 19th Century, the word Kapitän was also used for a Hauptmann, which was in use till around 1830. Thereafter, a naval rank only.

Kaiser wilhelm II., Tomb, Mausoleum and Residence in Doorn

When I visited in 1983, the coffin was still draped with the Kaiser's personal standard - a large yellow flagcloth with the heraldic insignia of the Order of the Black Eagle.

A disgracefull act of barbarism, the Kaiser played no practical role after 1914. This would have led to a radical form of total war, similar as proclaimed by Göbbels in 1943, and the enemy could expect no pardon.
