Croix De Guerre

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

What is meant by an Unofficial Croix De Guerre? I read they were made by the British, but why would the British make French Medals?? Does this make them fakes??

There is a big difference in the appearance of the Officials and Unofficials.

Thanks, Tzipi

Hi Tzipi ,

the unofficial medals were made for the French Government in exile by J.R. Gaunt & Co of London. These were awarded to the Free French Forces and should be regarded as original items. The official French made medal was dated 1939 , the London made unofficial medals come with different dates on the back and some had no dated at all.

Hope this helps :)
