Gildwiller1918
Another new item, a Stokes Mortar Crate for the propellants used in the Mortar rounds. The 30 cartouches are the propellant charges used in the perforated tube at the rear of the round, looked like a shotgun or flare cartridge. The 84 Relais portion I am not 100% sure of, this may be for the propellant rings that were added to the rear of the rounds, sometimes 3 per round were used. This crate and contents were most likely for the French Mortier Brandt de 81mm modele 27, which was a updated version of the WW1 Stokes design. This design was updated again in 1931, being called the Brandt mle 27/31. This design was such a success that many other countries adopted this mortar for their forces. During the Battle of France in 1940, the French forces had over 8,000 of these mortars in service. Last image is of the Mortar mle 27 from the internet.
