Gildwiller1918
Below is a enlisted cap, this one has no insignia however it has a very nice red colored liner and leather sweatband. No tags or makers stamps.
Gildwiller1918
This is perhaps the oddest cap I have come across, it is fabricated like a side cap, but made from a wool material used to make knitted watch caps. It has internal ear flaps that can be folded up or down and is lined. Interesting item. The Red Cross, YMCA and various other organizations handmade items for the troops, this may be one of their works.
Gildwiller1918
Newly acquired cap, this one is a 2nd Lieutenant as denoted by the gold colored rank bar. The piping is purple which was for the motor transportation corps (MTC). The MTC was responsible for the design, production, procurement, reception, storage, maintenance and replacement of all motor vehicles. They however did not deal with tanks. In 1919 the corps colors were changed from purple to scarlet red intertwined with green. In 1920 the MTC was incorporated into the Quartermaster Corps. This cap is French made as evident by the Paris stamp inside. The cap also has keepers on the side to ensure a smart appearance. The officer corps piped caps are harder to find than the enlisted versions.
John R.
Gildwiller1918: Thank you for sharing your W.W.I period United States cap collection with the Forum. Fantastic examples, I really like the rank insignias on the officers' caps and the use of materials/fabric to make the caps in your collection. Thank you for being the steward of the these caps. Regards, John R.
