Memorial for Generalfeldmarschall Helmuth von Moltke

Recommended Posts

Situated opposite the entrance to Wandsbek's Eichtalpark is a large boulder (Findling) with a bronze plaque commemorating Generalfeldmarschall Helmuth Graf von Moltke, 1800-1891, Chief of the Prussian General Staff, whose brilliant organisation in the wars of 1866 and 1870/71 led to victory.

Illustrations depict the memorial in it's present state and position opposite the entrance to the Eichtalpark on the Ahrensburger Strasse. The gates of the park are mounted with two stone sphinx statutes, which formerly decorated the driveway to former Wandsbek Castle, demolished after 1848.

Moltke was born in Parchim, but owned a modest house in the Kattunbleichen 1 in Wandsbek, which was demolished in 1950.
