sommewalker
"A touchy subject,""replacement ribbons verses Original ribbons",we all have our own views on the subject ,and all I am trying to do is show the difference, between the 2,...as I know that some come with either, photo 1 shows a set of replacement ribbons, notice how shiny they are and how stiff they, are, these also show the sharp colours, associated with replacement ribbons,in contrast the 2nd photo shows an original set of ribbons, made from watered silk, textiles, a moire (/ˈmwɑr/ or /ˈmɔr/), less often moiré, is a fabric with a wavy (watered) appearance produced mainly from silk, but also wool, cotton and rayon. The watered appearance is usually created by the finishing technique called calendering. Moire effects are also achieved by certain weaves,[1] such as varying the tension in the warp and weft of the weave, or by running the fabric through engraved copper rollers. Silk treated in this way is sometimes called watered silkthe colours over time are much more subdued , and the silk is a lot thinner, apart from the years of dirt that has accrued ,the 3 rd photo shows the trio with the original watered silk issue ribbons, and I've placed a replacement victory medal ribbon on top,as a comparison,as ive said before every ones opinion is different, some say stick with original, and some say use replacement ribbons, the choice is up to the individuals and the cost has to be factored in,also .....
Kenny Andrew
I recognise those ribbons Peter personally I think they look much better with the original ribbons
leon21
Here's a medal pair to a Royal Engineer that I recently had to have remounted with replacement ribbons, as the original victory medal ribbon had ripped in half and the medal had become detached from the original mount. I agree they do look better with original ribbons.
Kenny Andrew
Excellent display Colin,I know what you mean about the original ribbons, however in this case I think the replacement ones look quite good. I'm a bit OCD and like symmetry in my displays and the replacement ribbons certainly make the medals look allot neater. Would never replace medals with original ribbon and mounting but if the ribbons are missing or damaged then I think they look pretty good remounted. Again it's down to personal taste but I think they look pretty smart.
