sommewalker
a piece of advice for fledgling militaria collectorsand how to tell the difference between original and fake badges, using your eyes at first ,but even those can be deceivedif you look for known examples of fakes , and I will use a ww1 naval mine clearance badge as an example ,...the first pic shows a fake as denoted by the faint split lines running from ,the bottom of the mine diagonally, through to the top left of the mine(yellow arrows)this happened when the original die was broken in half ,when they finished the original run, some one has glued them back together and made fakes from it,the second is one that looks genuine ,the 3rd one is a close up of the second badge, and as you can see quite clearly, the faint split lines in the original die showing in the copy, this was found using a digital microscope that plugs into a lap top,the 4th is a genuine one ,and the 5th 1 is another example this time with a backing plate, they both look the same, the 5th one is in a museumso it pays to do your research and look out for unscrupulous people, out to make a quick buck so to speak...........................
Kenny Andrew
Thanks for sharing this Peter, I knew the fake ones had the split line, but I did not realise this was because the original die was destroyed when the original run was finished. You learn something new everyday
