  1. Today
  2. Today’s item of interest is one of the most poignant German posters that was put up in Jersey during the whole of the Occupation. It was announcing the execution of Francois Scorned by firing squad. Not only did it tell of his execution but it served as a massive warning to the Islanders as to what might happen to them if they were to attempt to escape. Below is some additional information from the internet which might be of interest. Francois Scornet was one of a group of 16 young Frenchmen who, inspired by a radio broadcast by exiled French leader General Charles de Gaulle in 1940, set sail in an open boat from the north-Brittany port of Dourduff on 13 December 1940 aiming to reach England and join the Free French forces. Some had not even told their parents that they were leaving. Their escape was beset with bad weather which destroyed their navigational equipment and when they eventually sighted land, they mistook the Guernsey coast for the Isle of Wight and sailed into Vazon Bay jubilantly yet foolhardly singing the Marseillese. They were arrested by German troops and sent to Jersey where they were eventually tried by a German war court. Scornet was identified as the ringleader and, together with three others, was sentenced to death. In the event only Scornet was executed and the other members of the party had their sentences reduced to life imprisonment and were sent to prison in Caen and then to camps in Germany. On 17th March 1941 Francois Scornet (21) was taken from the Grand Hotel where he had been held. He was loaded into a lorry together with a German firing squad, a French priest and a coffin. At St Ouen’s Manor he was tied to a tree and was executed shouting ‘Vive La France’. Scornet’s parents were sent for to witness his execution and Catholic priest Pere Mare was asked to administer the last rites as the unfortunate young Frenchmen was put before a firing squad for ‘wilfully supporting England in the war against the German Empire’. In the final letter he was allowed to write to his parents he said:”I believe the end of my existence has come. I will die for France, bravely facing the enemy.” Scornet was buried in Almorah Cemetery in St Helier but following the Liberation his remains were exhumed and on 18 September 1945 a solemn mass was celebrated at St Thomas’ Church by Pere Mare, attended by island dignitaries, becore the young Frenchman’s remains were returned to Brittany for burial in his native town. 7. I looked for a medal card for him but could not find one, he should have got the Kings war badge. Below are 3 more images. 1st a Freemasons Membership Register for the Calabar Lodge dated 1921. 2nd an outward passenger list from Ireland, destination port Montreal Canada on the ship Letitla dated 12 May 1933. 3rd an incoming Passenger list from Africa to Liverpool arrived 26 Feb 1924 on the ship Zaria. ( 5th row down ).
  8. Many thanks, I wonder if he were entitled to the Kings War Badge for the disabled and the War Medal? My aunt did mention that he had medals of some sort, but we never found any.
  9. Here are a few images of his service records I've come across, his pension card is held in Fold 3 but I can't download that as i'm not a member.

    NSKK Magazine

Hello Gildwiller1918, I would be very grateful if you could advise where I may have sight of a 1936 NSKK magazine which lists the Winterprozeug of 1936. I currently have a camera (a Leica) given as a prize to a competitor of that winter event. best regards ken Ainsworth

    German ww1 equipment

    Nice items, and well marked!
  15. A vendor that I deal with has a paint that they claim is a historical match, so going to try it out and see how it looks.
  16. What colour are you going to paint it.

    CSRG Chauchat

Early model CSRG without flash hider, to the right, personal leather magazine carrier and backpack magazine carrier.
  18. Picked up another M1917 Helmet shell, this one is marked ZE33. No texture or much of the original paint left. I have primed it for a new paint job and texturing.
  19. From my old notes, I forgot about these sources. https://chuckhawks.com/nagant_revolver.htm A really interesting video on ammo and gas seal. Worst trigger pull on a revolver that I ever encountered! Cartridges really stick in the cylinder of the rebuilt weapons. Not so much on bring backs in original condition. Really slow to reload in combat. A nice documented bring back; https://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/342635-russian-nagant-m1895-revolver-bringback/ Take Down:

  21. Hi everyone, here are some pieces of german equipment from my collection: -1914 early style 98/05 bayonet with a steel scabbard -1917 late style 98/05 bayonet with steel scabbard -ersatz bayonet and scabbard, still with original paint -hebel flare gun, completely matching numbers -pioneer wire cutters -dogtag set (posted them before separately) -prussian belt with belt buckle (+ an extra belt buckle) -1915 bread bag with nice markings, initals and a name -1915 cavalry or artillery ammo pouch -egg grenade with inert fuse -telegraph/communication unit headphones -mg08 and mg08/15 ammo belt with inert rounds I'd like to get a complete set of original equipment, but I still need quite a few pieces (bayonet frog, backpack, zeltbahn, messtin, canteen, infantry ammo pouches, shovel,...) It will probably take quite a while, but it'll be worth it.
  22. The young woman caught in the crossfire was Katharina Esser. She was buried in an unnamed grave. Nearly 70 years later, her identity was confirmed and a grave marker was made. https://edition.cnn.com/2018/11/10/us/ww2-reunion-us-german-veterans/index.html Quelle: CN live_0863e072-b90d-424d-8287-c25e6175532f.avif
