Inthe British Armed Forces, the despatch is published in the London Gazette.Example of a Victory Medal 1914–18 with Mention in Despatches (British) oak leaf spraySoldiers of the British Empire or the Commonwealth of Nations who are mentioned in dispatches but do not receive a medal for their action, are nonetheless entitled to receive a certificate and wear a decoration. For 1914–1918 and up to 10 August 1920, the decoration consisted of a spray of oak leaves in bronze.[1] This decoration was only established in 1919, but it had retroactive effect. From 1920 to 1993, the decoration consisted of a single bronze oak leafits good to see that the regiments that also did their bit getting recognition ,his family must have been very proud,it is sad in a way that at the time when service men came home, that a lot of medals were thrown away or sold , as at the time understandably they didn't want to talk about what they saw ,but we must try to help to keep their memories alive for future generations
