Hi All

im not familiar with edged weapons, they aren’t my thing, however, an extremely nice gent gave me this as he is aware I collect his father was in the black watch and was tasked with looking for prominent Nazi’s after the war.

This had nothing to do with his father - it is German, First World War I’m sure, but can anyone help with model etc- is it worth restoring or should I leave it as it is.

A war bring back which was kept in a coal house for decades apparently- hence the condition.

Many thanks.

It is a WW1 KS 98 (KS =kurzes Seitengewehr), a type often favoured by officers, this version with a sawback and wooden grips, more often they had black chequered grips made of leather or synthetic material.
The wood may be treated with linseed oil, the metal parts soaked and rubbed down with a quality gun oil. I would not do more for the moment, as the metal parts seem heavily pitted, and nothing will be gained by grinding them clean.

Does the weapon have any faint stamps or maker's marks? These can reveal more information on the weapon.

Did you find any markings on the bayonet?
