ID request, what uniform is in this stereoview

These are German or US Marine, I doubt if French. Why would a WW I marine in combat have a class A dress hat on. That is very unlikely. Maybe these two are British?

Do any uniform experts have any idea of the soldiers in this keystone stereo view card of Belleau Wood ?  I am also providing the description from the back of the card. Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe this is a posed ( set up) photo where two Marine officers are touring the battlefield with a photographer and each officer with class A hat ( which they normally wore) was used to mark the dugout locations. That might be what is going on in this photo well after the battlefield was cleared. Unlikely, but the soldier, the one on the left, seems to have a rifle?  Odd an officer would carry a rifle.  My guess--They are US Marine officers or British soldiers?

This link lets one zoom in.   This provides a much better view. Definitely not German.    https://xula.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collection/p16948coll10/id/125

I am thinking USMC and maybe the guy on the left has a corps patch with the light colored Indian and the guy on the right may have an eagle and globe on the hat which would be USMC officers posed in the photo. Maybe this photo was taken months after the battle.  The light color band around the hat on the guy on the left may be light reflecting off the cloth band around a WW I USMC officer's hat. That was different from the all the same material on the cover of the 1922 Cap.

  • 2 weeks later...

I speculate this view was taken at the same day or week and an officer is also in this view. Some USMC officers must have been escorting the Keystone cameraman around that day. image.png.42be7d6327dbc199799ad713f415dcda.pngimage.thumb.jpeg.ad267795d24e30167c619fc5e38a6a54.jpeg

Hello 72 USMC,

I do agree that this photo was probably taken after the action was over. It is still hard to tell exactly what the cap is from the photo. It may be a US Army cap, as they had a wider looking cap brim, as the Marine one was more bell shaped, at least that is how it looks to me in the photo. Marines did also wear Army uniforms with marine buttons and insignia during the war. Sorry I can't give you a definitive answer. But neat photo nonetheless.
