John333
Does this k98 look all original ?
Fritz
All original. Are all the parts equally numbered? The dot 44 stamp is Waffenwerke Brünn, 1944. The number stamped into the butt looks like postwar foreign use. 2
John333
Probably not all matching as the dealer wants 800 for it ? I’m assuming a matching k98 would go for more than that? But I’ve asked..
John333
No not matching is £800 too much ?
Fritz
I haven't seen any prices lately, as all sales here have been stopped. However, prices for parts have soared. Not permitted are systems, bolts and barrels.
John333
K98 arrived today doesn’t look the cleanest example but hoping to change parts of it that do not belong on a dot 44 …
Fritz
Linseed oil for the woodwork. I wouldn't change too many parts. Parts were replaced in service, nothing unusual. There is an MdI stamp on the breech from DDR times, reissue by Ministerium des Inneren. They were used for a while in the 1950s until they were replaced by Soviet weapons. 2
John333
Does that mean that the barrel is a post war production? Dealer did actually fail to show me these in the photos he sent
Fritz
It's a wartime production, you can see the manufacturer code and date. It has been reissued and stamped by the MdI in the 1950s, probably 1955, as marked on the breech. 2
John333
I’ve questioned this as others have suggested the barrel is post war production and manufactured by the DDR in 1955. When they refurbished the gun for their use ?
Fritz
Not refurbished but tested and with a nitro Prüfmarke on the breech. 2
John333
Ok so you’re confident it’s all ww2 and I should keep it. Thanks for your help!
Fritz
Yes. Unfortunately, the postwar marks spoil it a bit "Fremdstempelung", but can't be helped. 2
John333
Does this look a better option ?
Fritz
1937 dated with the flat butt plate. At least it has original markings, which have not been removed, otherwise not any better, just a matter of taste.
John333
I actually prefer the one I have because of the added history with it. I actually found a struck out waffenamt marking on the barrel also.
John333
Or is that part of the site sleeve and not the barrel ?

Plus the dealer is asking £100 less for it.
Fritz
I think that is part of the sight mounting, I haven't examined that or dismantled it. Prices can vary from dealer to dealer or for rarer or more interesting variations or examples. Personally I prefer the deep butt plate, as it is only found on this type of rifle. Always better when all original stamps and no postwar stamps. You also have two choices of woodwork the earlier plain wood and the wartime "Schichtholz", which is laminated, and probably stronger. 3
Gildwiller1918
Fritz is correct, that part is a sleeve for the rear sight. 3
