arathemis
Hi guys, here are a few photos of a ww2 EK2 that i found for sale. Is it real or fake? My worry is that the ring is too shiny compared with the cross... I also don't see any markings on the ring.... Thanks
arathemis
Btw, price is about 100 euro. Is this fair price?
Fritz
Looks ok. Is there a number stamped into the ring? 100 for today's standards is ok. The ring is usually shinier, as it rubs against the loop and the ribbon, now missing. 2
arathemis
No number on the ring.... Mentioned in the first post
Kenny Andrew
As Fritz says it looks OK but I agree with you you the wear is inconsistent especially to the ring and suspension loop. The beading and area around the date also look odd, however this could just be the pictures. I don't think I could make a call on this cross without a hands on inspection, if it were me I would pass.
arathemis
Moreinfo: it does stick to a magnet. I would incline towards autenthicity because of the rust spot to the right of the swastika, and also the rust in the top right corner on the swastica's side. Unfortunately the seller is 400 km away, so i could only see it once i pay for it :)). I asked for more pictures...
Fritz
The best copies also have an iron core, as Kenny states, best to see it in your own hand.

Fritz
I wasn't sure about this one.
Kenny Andrew
Arathemis if you have not actually bought the cross I would definitely wait for a better one, there are plenty of "one lookers" around, you are only going to buy one EK2 so at least wait to get one with a ribbon and preferably a makers mark. 2
arathemis
Ok, i'll pass then. Thanks for the advice.
Fritz
Good principle: If in doubt, leave it. 2
Gildwiller1918
I agree, I would pass. Too many red flags.
Istvan
Gentlemen, I'd like to ask for some expert opinions. I have just bought this piece in Budapest yesterday. No maker's mark. What do you think?
Kenny Andrew
Welcome to the forum Istvan, this is a Rudolf Souval Iron cross. The problem with these crosses is Souval continued to make these crosses into the 1970's. It's impossible to tell with the flat type retaining catch which you have posted whither it's war time or not, but the consensus seems to be the flat type retaining catches are post war until proven otherwise. Excepted war time Souvals had a wire type retaining catch, here is the wire type retaining catch which is accepted as wartime.
arathemis
Hi again. Found a new piece for sale. Same question: real or not? Thanks. 1
Eddieq
I’m no expert on 1914 EK’s but I’ve seen and own ones with maker marks but not patent marks. Also the back does not match the front - might be wrong about all of the above but not one l’d buy. Others will be able to comment with more insight.
Kenny Andrew
Yes as Eddie says this is a rather bad copy unfortunately
arathemis
Thanks guys. The price is also a bit too good to be true (about 60 eur). So I'll pass
