Have you seen the new version of "The eagle has landed" Kirk!!! ? It's good all the bits that were edited out from the original film are back in including the rousing bit where he plays the church organ , a few extra scenes too which were not in the original movie, including a brief appearance from the Fuhrer

Must look out for that one! How do you know which DVD is the new one? Is there any thing on the case to identify it?

Hi Dave this is the one you want ,this has both the original and the extended version.

This one is a more recent release however it does not have the original version on it, the original version is good because it has the documentry style beginning instead of the Canaris Hitler beginning which while interesting is not as atmospheric, this one has more extras on it but I would still go for the first one.

you could always pick up both I think they are only about 3 or 4 quid each , all my fav films seem to be around this price ,I wonder what that says about my movie taste. :D but really you would only be picking up the newer version to get some more extras ,I think things like a film about the original village where they shot the movie and things like that.I haven't seen the newer version so the extras could be quite interesting but as I say you don't get the original theatrical release on that one.

Kenny, if you scroll up you will see my original post on this thread was commenting on the cheap prices of war film DVDs at the moment! Seems to have taken a life from there!

What are the top 10 war movies ever and what are the worst stinkers?

here is mine.

1. Saving Private Ryan

2. The Great Escape.

3. Where Eagles Dare

4. Downfall

5. Tora Tora Tora

6. Battle of the Bulge

7. Battle of Britain

6. The Wild Geese, great cast and love Ronald Fraser's part!

7. Das Boat

8. Sophie Scholl, great film with lots of tension and super court scene at the end, frightening stuff!

9. Force 10 from Navarone

10. Taegukgi super Korea war movie!

Platoon and Hamburger Hill are also quite good.

stinkers

Pearl harbour, Tora Tora Tora was better.

green berets

Enemy at the gates, could have been better, i hate the cast.

a bridge to far, another one that could have been great, all over the place and too many well known actors, Robert Redford and Elliot Gould, crap actors!

The longest Day, the Longest bore!

Full metal Jacket, liked it at the time, not enough action and hate the plastic palm trees at London docks, like someting from a Oasis video.

theres a few more, will get back to the stinkers later!

Hi LP, we already have a similar thread so I have moved your post here, your thread name is more suitable so I have changed this one to Top 10 War movies and worst?

Generally think no such thing as a bad war film though some better than others. Noteable exception would be Combat Zone allegedly a cult vietnam war film. Never seen such a dire film. Must have had a budget of no more than £50 and obviously set in a European wood. Crap story line too wasted 8 quid on it a couple of years ago and still bitter I did.

I got Private Shulze on DVD on Saturday, anybody remember that ? I used to watch it at school , can't believe that was almost 30 years ago! still worth watching and strange because every second member of the cast was in Eastenders long before Eastenders existed, see how many you can spot if you get it.

Total nostalgia for me :o

I remember that. Printing fake uk pounds. That was a cracking series.

I started watching Secret Army on one of the History Channels a wee while back. That was great as well.

They don't make them like they used to.

keep an eye out for a czech film called tank brigade, the acting isn't very good but the german equipment used is fantastic, supposedly used equipment left by the germans at end of the war.

As long as your forget your watching a propaganda film its great for spotting.

Here is an interesting list. At least a brief synopsis and comment follows foreach of the 50 movies.  Also view Timeout's lower list of 50 movies that also provides some commentary about the movies strong points and or history.

https://www.vulture.com/article/best-war-movies-ranked.html

It is rather odd how much variation is found in the lists and how so many leave out some of the better non American produced movies. 🫣50 movies

https://www.timeout.com/film/best-war-movies-of-all-time

 5 Most realistic by Movieweb:

https://movieweb.com/realistic-war-movies/#all-quiet-on-the-western-front

5) Come and See

4) Jarhead

3) Saving Private Ryan

2) Stalingrad original

1) All Quite on the Western Front

Most realistic rated by Vets, 8 movies  by SF Gate :    Note the slightly different list at the bottom also by Vets. It is interesting looking at both as a comparison.

There is agreement on the newer movies, and similarities with the others, each shows just different ratings. I find it odd  All Quite on the Western Front is left off.

https://thespoke.co/lists/uYhJiW

1)  Resptrepo 2010     other list the same 1/10-- I believe these to be post Vietnam vets for the top two.

2) Generation Kill 2008    other list the same 2/10

3) Saving Private Ryan, 1998       rated five

4) Stalingrad, new 2013 version

5) Full Metal Jacket  1987              rated seven

6)  Black Hawk down 2001            rated eight

7) Lone Survivor                                rated nine

8  )Jarhead 2005                                 rated ten

Top 10????? Some great action clips shown here....😋

I still favor Pacific, Band of Brothers, the first part of Saving Private Ryan & Full Metal Jacket.  The first three drove up the value, interest, and demand for surplus WW II rifles.  And the DI in the first part of FMJ with Lee Ermery is an accurate picture of USMC boot in the 1969-1970s time period. The other half is garbage.   In Platoon 2010  we had a boot stab the D.I  Then they took away our bayonets and we had one foot sections of rubber hose.  All 109 of us were 0311 gunts except for the house mouse who was assigned  as a remington raider and myself who was placed into tanks.  Semper Fi

In reality, there are just so many neat war movies.

For  great war documentaries consider...

Burn's sets The War and The American Civil War

The Cold blue

Apocalypse WW I and Apocalypse WWII also Apocalypse 45

They shall not grow old

Spitfire

15 Best Foreign War Flicks

Another list of more familiar movies at least to me

Source:  https://www.wearethemighty.com/mighty-movies/15-best-foreign-war-films/

*Day of Glory  (France)

*Das Boot   (Germany)

*Tae Guk Gi  (So. Korean)

Waltz with Bashir  (Israel)

Waar  (Pakistan)

The Battle of Algiers  (Italy)

*Lebanon   (Israel)

Mongol  (Kazakhstan)

Paradise   (Palestine)

Assembly  (China)

*Gallipoli  (Australia)

Silmido  So,  (Korea)

*Talvinsota  (Finland)  ie Winter War

*The Star  (Russian)

Border  (India)

Other movies that  I love and own which are great, but no one seems to talk about are Battalion, Shershaah, Land of Mine, Days of Glory, Cross of Iron, Winter in Wartime, Unknown Soldiers, T34, And The Night Witches, Wings, Piece of Cake, and the UXB series.  Also in the U. S., Gettysburg for its reenactment battle footage. Pickett's charge and the artillery duel with over 60 cannons firing by re-enactors is like some of the Braveheart or  The Last Samurai movie clips--fantastic. But then I am a nut for  Once Upon a Time in the West and the original The Day the Earth Stood Still-classics, but not war movies.

You wonder who makes these lists, my favorites don't even make the list... Cross of Iron , The Eagle has Landed, Zulu,  Zulu Dawn all classics and far superior to the bulk of the above movies.

I watched Escape to Athena recently, WW2 movie, Roger Moore, Telly Savalas among others. Cast was decent but the story and acting were disappointing. I had never heard of this movie before and I now know why.
