The Meritorious Service Medal

The Meritorious Service Medal (MSM ) is a British Medal awarded to Sergeants and Warrant Officers of the British

Armed Forces, for long and Meritorious Service from 1916 to 1928. Eligibility was extended to cover both valuable

service by selected other ranks irrespective of length of service, and for Gallantry not in the face of the enemy.

Here is one awarded to No 73266 Sgt E J Dungate a Telegraphist who served in North Russia at the port of Murmansk

from 1918 to 1919, as part of the British Expeditionary Force, were  small British Naval detachments had been landed

on the invitation of Moscow, for the protection of the port. It's aim was to prevent the Germans and Finnish troops

from capturing the ports of Murmansk and Petchenga and using them as Submarine Bases.

The strength of the German Army in Finland was about 55,000, in addition to some 50,000 Finns, who were acting

under the orders of General von der Goltz, the German Commander.

The British Force consisted of some 600 troops of the Home Defence almost all would be of a physical category so low

as to render them unfit for duty in France. Also added were 400 Royal Marines, 1 company of 29th London Regiment,

the 253rd Machine Gun Company, plus 2 sections of the 584th Field Company R.E. and a battalion of Serbian Infantry

and some French Artillery, under the orders  of Major-General Sir C. Maynard. The Force was  given the name ( Syren ).
