The institution has been in Altenbruch since 1989, and is unique:
The Deutsches U-Boot Museum (formerly U-Boot Archive). It is a foundation of public law. Founder and initiator was the former U-Boot Wachoffizier of WW2, Horst Bredow.
He begann shortly after the war with his historical work. The archive was previously in Berlin, then on the grounds of the Marine-Fliegerhorst on the island of Sylt, as the family of the founder had a domicile there. After the airbase closed, the question arose, "Where to now?"
In Cuxhaven the significance was recogned and placed a house in the Bahnhofstraße 57 at disposal.
With the years the amount of material grew so immense, that this house was no longer enough. The foundation then purchased the house in the Lange Straße 1 and then placed their private house in Lange Straße 3 at disposal. Not only did the amount of material increase, but also the subject areas, and as people had copied material from the archive via the internet, infringing the copyright, a renaming was necessary.
The museum itself is now in the Bahnhofstraße 57. The archive in Lange Straße 1 takes up an entire house, where also the administration is situated. Museum, archive and library are used by authors and historians worldwide and are very much appreciated as a scientific source. The material collected includes almost everything belonging to the subject "Unterwasserfahrt", and includes foreign navies and civil submarines.
Museum visitors are kindly requested to make an appointment for their visit under telephone number 04722-322. The museum includes everything to do with German U-Boots in both world wars. The entire thematic is represented, not only technical and historical facts, but also includes the U-Boot crews, inventors, technicians and strategists.
Even an 88 mm board gun has been installed in the musuem. Museum and archive are closed in December and January. Since 2013 there is also the possiblity of research under
https://uboot-recherche.de online within the collections. The data bank is regularly updated and expanded.
