Gildwiller1918
Here is a new item, a WW1 crate for 76.2mm shrapnel rounds. The box is quite sturdy and solid, and has markings that basically say more or less "76.2 mm shrapnel, 8 pieces, British order". On the back of the box there is a stencil that reads: Ammunition for cannon, explosive projectile from E.A.C. The Eddystone Ammunition Company (EAC) was created in Pennsylvania by Baldwin Locomotive Works to produce the 76.2 mm shell under contract from Britain. The factory was built starting in 1915 and was in operation until August of 1917. The factory was purchased in September 1917 by the US Government to produce 75mm shells. During its time in service, the plant made over 2.5 million 76.2mm shells for export to Russia. No history on how this box survived in the US, probably left over crates from the production run that were sold off as surplus.
