Achtung Spitfire!
So do you collect the buttons & suchlike as individual items or add to items of uniform?
Fritz
Both, when parts of a uniform are missing, I look for original replacements.

Fritz
x Another spare - a spike base for an infantry Pickelhaube. This example came from an 1889 helmet from Füsilier-Regiment 39, later with Reserve-Infanterie-Regiment 39, still with both regimental stamps. The spike is missing, this was originally soldered on with tin. Either the spike had got lost in time, or it was officially removed, as per the regulation for the Front Line, at the lastest, January 1916. The later greymetal helmets all had a removable spike. I replaced the spike many years ago with an appropriate replacement. This helmet has some war damage, a shot or a piece of shrapnel went through the front, just under the sceptre of the eagle, splitting this, no parts missing, this then went through the leather liner, and has caused slight breakage to the bottom edge at the rear. Damage not visible in the photo below. Niederrheinisches Füsilier-Regiment 39, later with Reserve-Infanterie-Regiment 39 (VII. Reserve-Korps)
Fritz
Just ordered this original spare part for a Prussian Kavallerie-Degen 89, which arrived just now. The price was very reasonable. This example is made of bakelite, and there are some slight traces of use and age, some rust staining around the areas where the fittings were, there also a small chip out of the bottom edge, but would not be seen when mounted on an original sword, as this area fits under the grip ring. A collector and historian in Holland recently purchased an original KD89 from the Wandsbek Husar Regiment, however, the grip is very badly damaged and would need replacing or much restoration, so this will be sent to him forthwith. There is also the possibility of restoring the original grip. A comparison with a copy made about 25 years ago in Berlin, the copy is of a special plastic and was only made in a limited number, visible are the cast hairline cracks of the original it was copied from. Note difference in size and dimensions.
