Gildwiller1918
Here is a nice WW1 era 18 pounder primer protector, it went on the end of the rimmed brass casing to protect against accident punctures before intended use, these were easy to install, three sides had a groove which slid over the rim on the brass casing the fourth arm was spring loaded to prevent it from coming off. Both the end of the shell was protected and the fuse was also protected. Typically shells were delivered with the fuse removed or with a fuse cover or plug. Once they arrived safely, they then were prepped for use. I got this in the Ypres area.
