Early war photo of French Dragoons and Chasseurs. Most Calvary units were converted to Machine Guns units during the war, however the military still had a love for the Calvary and some units were in service till war's end.

In this often published photo, allied troops are guarding German prisoners after the capture of Bellicourt in 1918. Mark V tanks with cribs can be seen in the background. Over half the books I have seen this image in say the allied troops are Australians, however by examining their equipment, they are clearly US troops, however they have SMLE rifles. Most likely the troops are part of the US 30th Division.

US soldiers riding Indian PowerPlus Motorcycles (which were produced from 1916-1924), most likely before the Us entered the war. The soldiers have the M1903 Springfield rifles and the early type leggings. Indian, along with Harley-Davidson supplied the military with motorcycles and side cars, however most did not make it overseas. Some did and were used as dispatch riders, mobile machine gun platforms, ambulances and even for homing pigeon lofts. These motorcycles have the US Signal Corps emblem on them.

Italian Alpini carrying a FIAT-Revelli Modello 1914. Italy was one of the first countries to adopt the Maxim guns, however when WW1 started, the waring nations got the priority for purchases. So Italy decided to make a domestic version, tailored to their needs. The FIAT-Revelli Modello was a delyed blowback system, and its most notable feature is the magazine. This gun used a detachable magazine which held 50 rounds, although a 100 round version was also available. The box magazine system was more complicated to make than the other types in service. The gun had a fire rate of about 400 rounds per minute and weighed 37 pounds, much lighter than the Maxim types. The Modello 1914 was updated for use in WW2 and over 47,000 were eventually produced.

Another image of the FIAT-Revelli Modello 1914, mounted on a bicycle. Note the Adrian helmet, the Italians used the French made helmets, but painted insignia on them instead of using plates as the French and other nations did.

Nice early war image of French troops wearing uniforms that were very much outdated. After heavy losses, especially in the officer ranks, they adopted the horizon blue uniforms in 1915.

French soldiers, 1916 in the Battle of the Somme. They are using the Lebel 1886/93 rifles as well as F1 grenade with the model 1915 percussion ignition plug, these are recognizable by the long cardboard tube covering the fuse.

The Russian Expeditionary Force (REF) or Corps Expéditionnaire Russe en France arrives in Marseille. France had asked for 300,000 men, however this was unrealistic, and several brigades were sent, in this photo, the 1st Brigade arrived in April of 1916 and roughly had about 9,000 men. Ultimately 5 brigades were formed, with most going to the Salonika Front.

Russian soldiers wearing their unique looking Zelinsky Kummant gas masks. These masks appear to have the longer oval type filter or Moskovsky. Most Russian soldiers later used the British made PH and SBR models.
