Gildwiller1918
Here is an example of the trench periscopes used by the various nations during WW1, this one is a US specimen. It is labeled "Trench Periscope No. 10" "X75, Model of 1918, M'fgd by Wollensak Opt Co. Rochester N.Y. USA No. 1136 R.G.C." The scope it brass and steel, and painted and green color. The end with the wooden rod was where you looked out of with your eye, the wood rod was inserted into the trench wall, the eye cap unscrewed, and the top lens cover turned backwards. This scope came in a leather carrying case for transport or when not in use, these were mainly used by officers and senior NCO's or those under their supervision.
