NSKK Side Cap

Gildwiller1918

Recommended Posts

This is a side cap for a Nationalsozialistisches Kraftfahrkorps (NSKK) or the National Socialist Motor Corps. This organization was formed in 1931 and was originally part of the SA, however in 1934 they were made a separate organization under the NSDAP. The NSKK was mainly a training organization, which instructed members on maintenance and operations of motorized vehicles. When the war started in 1939, this organization was used as a transportation service for military units, some units worked for Org. Todt and the Luftwaffe as well.

This Feldmutze, side cap is colored black and has the NSKK eagle on the wearers left, the background color signified the location of the troops battalion or unit. In this case the German region of Franken, which is north west of Bayern. The front of the cap has 2 small buttons, silver colored with the NSKK emblem. Inside the cap is a RZM tag, that reads: Feldmutze, Reich Zeug Meisterei (National Equipment Quartermaster) der NSDAP, and has a serial number: M295383, the tag is faded and needs the use of a good light and magnifying lens. The size is about a 58.

I will be posting the accompanying uniform soon.

NSKK side caps had colored background behind the egale to denote the region the troop was from. The list below shows details of this from 1934-1939. The first column shows the unit name, second column shows the color used on the caps and shoulder boards. Third column shows numerals used on shoulder board buttons, last column is the abbreviation.

I will post two more lists soon that show the evolution of the information below as the war carried on.

Right, there are a lot of the woven eagles available, most unissued, unworked. I think they have the same colour basis as the S.A.  Usefull list, where did you find this, or do you have a reference work?

Colour key, German/English

Carmine  - Karmesin
Vermillion - Zinnoberrot (as on early Danish uniforms)
Dark wine red - Bordeaux / Burgunderrot (?)
Black - Schwarz
Light red - Ponceaurot / leuchtend rot
Steel green -  Stahlgrün (uniforms of former Bayr. Chevauleger)
Apple green -  Apfelgrün
Dark brown - Dunkelbraun
Dark green  - Dunkelgrün
Emerald green - Schmaragdgrün
Orange yellow - Apfelsinengelb, Orange
Sulphur yellow - Schwefelgelb, Goldgelb
Light blue - Hellblau, Lichtblau
Navy blue - Dunkelblau

* Was there not a pale yellow colour (as army signals) - Zitronengelb ? I thought I saw this somewhere on an NSKK emblem?

I have an excellent reference book, in which I can probably answer anything you want to know about the NSKK/NSFK.

  • 1 month later...

I just came across a vendor selling reproduction NSKK side cap eagles, the type shown on my side cap, the colored versions from most of the regions. These reproductions look very new and mint but closely resemble originals.

Especially when so many originals(?) have been turning up recently.
A question on colour background - was there not also a pale yellow (as army signals) - Zitronengelb?  I thought I saw this on one example somewhere?

I looked through my reference, only three types of yellows are listed, first is sulphur yellow (used from 1934-45) which is the same as I have listed on my cap above. Orange yellow (used fom 34-45) , which was for the Sudwest gruppe (same color as my SA cap posted) and plain yellow (used from 42-45) for gruppe Niederschlesien.

Below are original examples of the Orange yellow, and sulphur yellow. I don't have an example of the plain yellow yet, I will try and find one.

Here are some of the fakes being offered now. I have seen at least five different colors so far.

So far I have seen repro NSKK colored side cap patches for the following gruppes. These are selling for about $5 here, the weave of the colored areas is much tighter than the original types. The white areas of the eagle and wreath do not have the same pattern as the originals either. Buyer beware.

Thuringen  -  color: Apple Green

Hochland   - color: Light Blue

Hessen        - color: Dark Blue

Sudwest     - color: Orange Yellow

Staff Units - color: Red

Niederrhein/Berlin  - color: Black

There are 3 main periods when it comes to colors designating gruppes, 1934-1939, 1940-1941 and 1942-1945. Most gruppes stayed the same, but as the war progressed, some units were merged with others to meet demands.

Here is the next list.
