Fritz
A British 18-Pounder shell head with fuse, purchased at the official stand at the offices of the South African War Memorial at Delville Wood in 1982. The copper bronze fuse has the lot number 1069 and date 1916. The driving band has the grooves of the barrel rifling. Overall deep pitting, overpainted as purchased. One of the many duds discovered and de-activated, hollow and empty, the fuse cap was loose and has been stuck in place.
Gildwiller1918
Very nice Fritz! The ordnance is getting harder and harder to get now a days. I also have a similar shell. This one has a brass casing from 1915, and the shell has not been fired as evident by the driving band.
Fritz
I had several of these shell cases, also a French 75, a German 77, and a 77 shell head, somewhat older. 1915 examples would be rarer, more common are 1916-18.
Gildwiller1918
I have those as well, not easy to get here in the US, especially earlier dated ones.
Gildwiller1918
Here is my WW1 German 77 shell, all complete, inert obviously. Shell casing is dated 1914.
Fritz
My example had a different fuse end, which made it look so antiquated. Unfortunately I never made any photos before exchanging it.
