Here is another M1917, marked "ZC 191"It lacks the liner and chinstrap, but you can see the wool pad that was fixed to the copper rivet which held the leather straps for the helmet liner. On the outside front of the helmet is the painted insignia for the US first army.

Yet another M1917, marked "YJ 150" This helmet has been poorly refurbished, with a cheaply made liner and bad paint job, possibly done before the release of credible reproductions were available.

These X numbered helmets are thought to be from the first experimental lots made in the summer of 1917.

XH helmets are not from the experimental lots.  Steel company X supplied sheets directly to pressing company H, and used a unique system of letters to denote steel heats.

Very nice! It is not too uncommon to see these with the liners, the chinstrap however is almost always broken or missing, mainly due to improper storage and handling over the years.

Chinstraps can be carefully restored without replacing them. Some matching leather would replace any missing sections and they could be neatly joined. Any good traditional shoemaker or leather worker could do this, or you can do it yourself.

True Fritz, depending on the level of work needed to be done. In the US it is getting very hard to find leather repair experts, in England it was fairly common, not so much here.
