What is this unusual & strange ww2 Helmet?

Recommended Posts

Hi, Can anyone please help me identify this helmet. It has no holes or vents in it other than the hole on top that appears to have been caused through damage. Please see the bottom photo showing on the damage on the top of the helmet. It is made of a strange material that appears to contain fibres and is best described as 'bone' coloured.  The strange material that it is made from can  be seen on the inside of the helmet in picture two. The outside appears to have several layers of paint; The first layers of paint are an off white with a slight hint of blue, and the top layer of paint is black. I think the helmet looks German, and I think the remains of the red emblem on the side looks like it may have contained a swastika. I would be very great full it anyone could give me any suggestion regarding what it is made off, and also what sort of helmet it is. I haven't been able to find anything similar on Google. Thanking you in advance.

Hi Rohan, welcome to the forum, I'm afraid I've never come across this helmet either. The Germans did use Vulkan fiber but this looks more like Fiberglass, if so could it be a civil defense helmet or even a film prop? Hopefully some of the others will be able to help.

There were actually fibreglass or paper-maché helmets especially made only for parade purposes, also in Aluminium. Possibly one of these.
The helmet has probably been repainted postwar by someone, under the layers may be still the original paintwork. Whether the swastika decal is original, or a collectors application and then painted over, who knows? Would be worth some carefull examination by someone with a bit of experience. If you are near Glasgow, it might be worthwhile taking it in to Treasure Bunker for an expertise?

From the shape / style, it resembles the Model 42 helmet.  When I say fibreglass, it could well be Vulcan Fibre.

For the moment, I would not attempt to remove any paintwork.
