DDR - Border and Customs Check in the old days

Passengers and travellers and their luggage were thoroughly checked at each border control point, as well as travel documents and visas. The post was also checked thoroughly, no newspapers or magazines, books or printed matter in the German language  was allowed to be imported from the West, which applied to packages from West Germany, all of which were confiscated and either destroyed or examined by the authorities. Currency of any kind was also not to be sent by post. Export of antiques, works of art, weapons, etc. was prohibited, unless officially sanctioned.
