Colorized photo of a Bootsmannmaat next to a Churchill tank used in the Dieppe raid of 1942.  He appears to be holding a Martindale machete and armed with a Kar 98A rifle.

Colorized image of the Heinkel He 162 Volksjäger being looked over by RAF personnel after the war. Introduced in early 1945, it was made primarily of wood as metal was in short supply, being designed and built in less than 3 months. The plane could reach speeds of over 9oo KPH and was armed with a 20 mm cannon. The HE 162 only had about 30 minutes of fuel for flight, so it was limited in operations and due to lack of experienced pilots, never really performed as expected. The fighter had an ejection seat for the pilot, which was used 3 times in combat, 2 of which were successful. The HE 162 was a very streamlined and advanced aircraft, like some many of Germany's later war's efforts, it was just too little too late.

Colorized image of Volkssturm men wearing armbands that have Deutscher Volkssturm Wehrmacht printed on them, there were other armbands that were used as well. These 3 have Panzerfaust 60's over their shoulders as well. The Government tried to issue its ranks uniforms of all various types, but usually older men just wore the armbands or work uniforms as their was simply not enough to go around.

An interesting history of Le Touquet as an important fighter base from Summer 1940 can be read under follwing link (French text), an aerodrome still existing, nearest railway station, Étaples.  A very well detailed history, Göring visited there (stayed hôtel Royal Picardy), Galland, Theodor Osterkamp, were also based there:

School classes and Flakhelfer
School was reduced to 15 hours on a 3 days a week basis, otherwise the youths were at their posts. As from 1941 the "Notabitur" was introduced and schooling reduced to 12 years, then reinforcements were required for the front. Officer candidates could absolve their Notabitur instead of the normal Abitur. As from 1944 school was practicly omitted due to the night bombings of the RAF and the daylight bombings of the US air force.

Image of a German MG34 gunner, an Obergefreiter. Early war photo, as the scope is the MGZ34 model. The MGZ40 is more often encountered today. Note the mess kits in the background along with the optic box.

These photos taken by the Japanese

Japaner1.jpg

Japaner2.jpg

Captured US Army AirForce pilots, Tokio 1942.
Doolittle Raid: US bombing of Japan on 18 April 1942: The Doolittle Raid, also known as the Tokyo Raid, was an air raid on 18 April 1942 by the United States on the Japanese capital Tokyo and other places on Honshu during World War II. It was the first air operation to strike the Japanese archipelago. It demonstrated that the Japanese mainland was vulnerable to American air attacks, served as retaliation for the attack on Pearl Harbor, and provided an important boost to American morale. The raid was planned by, led by, and named after Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle, later a Lieutenant General in the U.S. Army Air Forces and the U.S. Air Force Reserve.
Of the 80 crew members, 77 survived the mission. Eight airmen were captured by Imperial Japanese Army troops in Eastern China, of whom three were later executed. The B-25 that landed in the Soviet Union was confiscated and its crew interned for more than a year before being allowed to "escape" via Anglo-Soviet-occupied Iran with the help of the NKVD. Fourteen complete crews of five returned to the United States or to American forces, except for one crewman who was killed in action.

Like most countries leading up to and during WW2, WW1 era machine guns were used for training, and defense purposes, sometimes in combat roles as well. Here are several Heer men with a MG08/15. This gun was slightly modified by adding a forward bipod mount and spider AA sights, the sight was stored on the side of the receiver when not in use. Most photos of these guns from WW2 show the blank firing muzzle adapter for use in training roles. A lot of the these guns were used on the Atlantic Wall as well.
