Fritz Posted October 1, 2018 Author Posted October 1, 2018 6. March 1945, dramatic moments in Cologne in the final stages of the war. One solitary Panther had destroyed a Sherman moments before. The Americans called up a complete armoured unit with infantry. The Panther was hit directly as it turned a corner at the square before Cologne Cathedral. Three of the crew baled out moments before a second shell hit the Panther, two of them were shot by machine gun fire from their opponent, one man is thought to have escaped. The tank commander failed to escape from the burning vehicle and perished. The burnt out wreck stood for months before it was finally removed. 4 Quote

Fritz Posted April 28, 2024 Author Posted April 28, 2024 The young woman caught in the crossfire was Katharina Esser. She was buried in an unnamed grave. Nearly 70 years later, her identity was confirmed and a grave marker was made. https://edition.cnn.com/2018/11/10/us/ww2-reunion-us-german-veterans/index.html Quelle: CN live_0863e072-b90d-424d-8287-c25e6175532f.avif 1 Quote
