Born as the daughter of Hauptmann Erich von Hornstein-Bietingen of the 1. Foot Guards, who fell before St. Quentin in August 1914. The Empress Auguste Viktoria brought over her condolences with an immediate personal visit. The little girl grew up with a lifesize water coloured photograph of her father in her room. After the war, Erika took up studies and became an artist. She further describes the years of world war 2 and the end in Potsdam. Erika lived in West Berlin and wrote several books till her death in 2005.
