WANDSBEKER HUSAREN by Hans-Werner Faerber, Verlag Otto Heinevetter, Hamburg 1991

Probably the only publication to appear on this subject since the regimental history in 1931. Very well written, and the subject of life-long research by the author, who was at home in Wandsbek for many years and having served as a senior officer with the Bundeswehr, including many years on the staff of the Bundeswehr Hochschule in Hamburg. Well illustrated in black and white with reproductions of many historical photos and documents accumulated over the years. Along with the original regimental histories very much recommended. German Text, has not been republished in recent years and copies have become increasingly scarce.

A Trilogie of books by Paul Carell about Operation Barbarossa, a text volume and a photo volume. A sequel to this covers the first retreats till the final collapse of the front and the great retreat, with the title Verbrannte Erde (Scorched Earth). Paul Carell (Pseudonym), real name - Paul Schmidt was official SS-Kriegsberichtserstatter for the duration of the war. Author of many books about World War II, his books have been published in many languages and in several editions. Paul Carell lived near Hamburg and died in 1997.

Very much recommended.

Two more books by Carell. "Die Wüstenfüchse" (The Desert Foxes), the story of Rommel and the Afrikakorps, sourced from original documents and eye witnesses, who took part. Many original photos.

"Die Gefangenen" (The Prisoners), the story of German prisoners of war in captivity on all fronts, during the war and the long captivity in most cases in Eastern Europe, the harsh treatment and the deaths that resulted from such. Many died also during mine-clearing accidents in the post war years. With many original photos.

Book title: Das Heerwesen in Brandenburg und Preussen von 1640 bis 1806
- Die Uniformierung by Klaus-Peter Merta and Jean Molitor
Published by the Brandenburgisches Verlagshaus
Most of the original material featured is from the collections of the Museum für Deutsche Geschichte, DDR,

The museum was privatised after 1990 and is now known as Deutsches Historisches Museum, DHM.

Excellent photos with descriptions and catalogue numbers, price guides from 1976 and 1979 attached within and a list of the numbered manufacturers codes. Brinkmann had his own militaria business, not well known, probably long ceased.

The author, Wilhelm Maybaum, 1929-2015, was a member of the Hitlerjugend and was evacuated to Hungary for a couple of years, due to the Allied bombings of major cities. Originally from Barmbek, he later lived in Wandsbek and worked for the Stormarner Sparkasse in Bad Oldesloe till his retirement.
He showed me his book in 2001, of which there are not more than 10 copies, distributed only to family members. Since deceased, his younger daughter Brunhilde also died in 2017. They are survived by brother Uwe and sister Gudrun, who now lives near Schwerin.
