Fritz
Here is a round of experts giving expertises on antiques and each making his competetive offer, with moderator Horst Lichter. This time, a member of the public offers his heirloom, a Grenadiermütze of 1. Garde-Regiment, which he got from his Godmother. He finally accepts 800 Euro for the item, much too little. I paid almost 4.000 Marks nearly 25 years ago. However, his example has the chinscales missing, as well as the Pompom, which has a meagre replacement. It is very interesting to see how little the dealers know about this item (some have never even seen one) and their attitude towards it. This Northern German TV show is the equivalent of the Bavarian "Kunst & Krempel" Show, latter has much more niveau, and the people concerned are of a much higher education. Unfortunately this one has been deleted. Here is another: This is a rare Pickelhaube of Infanterie-Regiment 96 (Reuß). However, there are a few issues. It turns out that the line eagle with the word "König" does not match the Reuß emblem fitted to the eagle. It should read "Fürst". Has otherwise the correct Reuß and Reichs cockade, the originality of former can not be verified in the photos. It also has a field cover with the correct numbers 96, originality of which can also not be certified. In all, the helmet is valued at 800-1000 under said conditions, as a guaranteed original, it would be worth 10 times more. The dealer also states that the spike should be held by 4 stars, as it is an officer's helmet, not necessarily true, it could be for a Fähnrich, in which case the round studs, two of which are missing, would be correct. It also has other ranks' cockades, and not an officers', which are also not incorrect. The owner would be delighted to get 800, and stated that he bought the set 40 years ago for a small sum. The owner stated that he extensively cleaned the helmet at the time, which was a mistake. Condition throughout appears as very good.
