Uniforms and other Insignia of the Old Army

Fritz

Recommended Posts

Nearly all the shoulder straps of the Old Army before 1902, as shown on these old colour plates by Moritz Ruhl of Leipzig. A few more new ones were introduced in the years following, otherwise a representative overview. All with their correct designation. Usefull information on a fascinating subject. These of course, are all other ranks' versions.

Garde-Füsilier-Regiment, 1. Kompagnie, ca. 1912
Garrison: Berlin
Regular issue tunic without any stamps. Some slight mothing in places, not noticeable.

Einjährig-Freiwilliger, Grenadier-Regiment König Friedrich Wilhelm IV. (1. Pommersches) Nr. 2, based in Stettin, II. Armee-Korps

100_3101.JPG

Einjährig-Freiwilliger Infanterie-Regiment König Ludwig III. von Bayern (2. Niederschlesisches) Nr. 47 - (10th company), based in Posen and Schrimm, V. Armee-Korps. This monogram was introduced in 1913

Füsilier-Regiment von Gersdorff (Kurhessisches) Nr. 80
stationed in Wiesbaden / Bad Homburg, XVIII. Armee-Korps

Light blue shoulder straps bearing the monogram of Victoria, die Kaiserin Friedrich*, with shoulder buttons of 8th company. Handwritten name tag inside collar, "Stein". The tunic has seen very much wear and with service repairs, and notably has been used for training recruits after outbreak of war, as seen by the fieldgrey side-hooks, later added, due to shortage of fieldgrey uniforms, this was common practice, until the recruits were sent to the front. Lower hook and eye set on collar missing. The low collar and brandenburg cuffs bear a unique pattern of single Litzen, known as Altpreußische Litzen, but without centre stripe, as worn only by this regiment. Further regiments wore this pattern of litzen, but with a red centre stripe;  5. Garde-Regiment zu Fuß, and Garde-Grenadier-Regiment 5. The cuff patch is additionally piped on the three outward edges in yellow, indicating the Prussian Regiments within the Hessian XVIII. Korps. The tunic does not have an internal dressing pocket.

Blue shoulder straps and yellow piped Brandenburg cuffs as worn by the non-Hessian regiments of the XVIII. A.K.
The Hessian regiments wore shoulder straps and cuff flap on a regimental colour basis.

The regiment wore the normal Prussian infantry helmet with the addition of a black parade plume.

A very much worn tunic in still collectable condition, the rightside collar Litzen has a repair, as this had been subject to a lot of wear from the equipment straps (Tornisterriemen), nap of cloth worn on some exposed areas.

Purchased by my father at an Islington arms fair about 1969.

*Eldest daughter of Queen Victoria of England, and mother of Kaiser Wilhelm II.

Additional belt hooks at side added after August 1914. Old stocks of the coloured peacetime uniforms were issued to recruits until they were sent to the front.

The tradition of the regiment was Hessian until 1866. Re-raised 1866-67 for the Prussian Army.

The Moritz Ruhl plates above date from somewhere between September 4, 1897 to January 15, 1902, during which time Victoria Melitta's cypher (VM) was used on the shoulder boards of the Infanterie Leib Regt. (3.Großherzoglich Hessisches) Nr.117. A divorce prompted the Grand Duke to change the regimental cypher to that of his mother, Großherzogin Alice.

Yes, quite right, and rare to find now. Another colour chart, all-inclusive of old and newer patterns,
noteworthy are:

J.R. 63 with monogram Kaiser Karl (1917)
J.R. 94 monogram of Wilhelm Ernst replaced that of Carl Alexander, 1916
Leib-G.R.100, old monogram of Albert and Friedrich August (1904)
I.Leib-R.117, old monogram of Viktoria Melita and later Alice (1903/4)
K.Bayr.3. I.R. Prinz Carl, old and new monogram (1916)

Prussia, a pair of Epaulettes for a Leutant zur Disposition. Most likely from the Garde-Fußartillerie-Regiment, Berlin
Also the original storage box for the Epaulettes, hand marked inside lid with the name of the owner "Alverdes", and I. Garnitur -
i.e., "1st. best pieces" - as these were not for everyday wear, but only for special occasions when required. The were worn with buttons of the colour matching the half moons, and held by Passanten of matching red cloth overlaid with the matching braid in the Prussian colours as on edges. The Passanten were sewn onto the uniform shoulder and remained otherwise under the usual everyday shoulder pieces.
"Alverdes" is listed as Seconde-Lieutenant in the 1897 Rangliste under Garde-Fußartillerie-Regiment. 3. Batterie. Not a German name.
Purchased at an antique shop in Hamburg around 1978.
(Epileps, as Wiktor Tuttlewsky used to say in the old days)🙂

3. Garde-Feldartillerie-Regiment, based in Berlin-Beeskow, raised in 1899.
The dark blue tunic has a black square collar and Swedish cuffs, all with yellow Doppellitzen. The shoulder straps are yellow with a three flame grenade, plain shoulder buttons were worn, no battery numbers.
The headdress worn was the pickelhaube with Guard Eagle and a balltop fitting, white plumes for parade. A whitened leather shoulder bandelier and Oberkoppel (swordbelt) with a brass rectangular buckle worn. The Kartuschkasten bore a yellow metal gilt Guard Star. A standard artillery sabre was worn. Drivers sections wore whitened equipment of infantry pattern and an infantry sidearm.

As of Summer 1914 there were four standing regiments of Garde-Feldartillerie, these were all based in Potsdam and Berlin. These regiments had various coloured shoulder straps, each with its own pattern of grenade.
The first regiment wore white shoulder straps, the second red, third yellow and fourth blue. The first regiment had two different patterns of grenade distiguishing the mounted batteries from the drivers sections. After the outbreak of war, the number of regiments were increased, drawing from reserves. There was also additionally the Feldartillerie Schießschule and the Artillerie Versuchsanstalt and Artillerie Prüfungskommission.

As worn till outbreak of war in 1914, of private purchase quality, and in the style worn by all field artillery regiments in the Prussian Army. The shoulder straps for artillery regiments were in various colours, in this case light blue for regiments of the VII. Armee-Korps, and bearing a regimental number beneath a bursting grenade.  The shoulder buttons were always without a battery number. The basic tunic cloth is a darker blue than in the photo. The tunic features Swedish cuffs as prescribed for the field artillery. All facings, collars and cuffs are black and piped in red. Buttons are gold coloured, which was always a copper colour in the Prussian Army. The tunic collar is fitted with the usual rank buttons for Gefreiter. Niedersächsisches Feld-Artillerie-Regiment No.46
Raised 1899, based in Wolfenbüttel and Celle, belonged to the X. Armee Korps (Hannover)
Shoulder straps M.1915/16 for field uniform in bright red, one pair and one odd.

Pair of collar buttons for Sergeant, Vizewachtmeister and Wachtmeister in peacetime quality (not matching above set), copper-coloured, these always had a mirror-like finish and were never polished.

Note: 1st.Batterie wore a scroll on the helmet eagle: PENINSULA WATERLOO GÖHRDE
2nd Batterie was Brunswick and wore the Brunswick cockade blue/yellow, with scroll as before with addition COLBERG 1807

This set came from the estate of Herr Gerd Melosch, Hamburg. His father had served before WW1 in this regiment in Wolfenbüttel and had lived there. The name Melosch has a foreign origin and either his father or grandfather came originally from Serbia, migrated to Vienna, and later to Germany. This was long before WW1. Herr Melosch the younger, served with the Luftwaffe in WW2 as ground personnel, and he managed to escape from the Falaise Pocket in Summer of 1944 using a French civilian bicycle, which he had stolen! At the end of the war, he lay wounded in a Lazarett in Thüringen and was captured there in that condition by American forces. He survived captivity and worked after the war with the NDR Norddeutscher Rundfunk as a technician. He passed away in 2001. Around 1998, he gave me this set, saying it was from his father. After his wife died, the daughter wound up the estate, and I saw some pre-war photos of her grandfather in the coloured peacetime uniform of his regiment in Wolfenbüttel. Unfortunately, I did not get these photos, some dealers were quicker. The daughter had no interest in the family history, and was just eager to clear out the house and get it sold quickly.

These company buttons arrived yesterday

100_7350.JPG

Top row, fieldgrey, silver and tombak coloured, one example is of zink, another of iron.
The last two buttons are destined for the Heimatmuseum, these were for the peacetime uniforms.
Getting harder to find.
