Fritz Posted June 29, 2017 Posted June 29, 2017 Nearly all the shoulder straps of the Old Army before 1902, as shown on these old colour plates by Moritz Ruhl of Leipzig. A few more new ones were introduced in the years following, otherwise a representative overview. All with their correct designation. Usefull information on a fascinating subject. These of course, are all other ranks' versions. 3 Quote
Fritz Posted June 29, 2017 Author Posted June 29, 2017 (Transferred from an older article, 8.4.2021) The waist buttons at the top are slotted for carrying the belt Garde-Füsilier-Regiment, 1. Kompagnie, ca. 1912 Garrison: Berlin Regular issue tunic without any stamps. Some slight mothing in places, not noticeable. Einjährig-Freiwilliger, Grenadier-Regiment König Friedrich Wilhelm IV. (1. Pommersches) Nr. 2, based in Stettin, II. Armee-Korps Einjährig-Freiwilliger Infanterie-Regiment König Ludwig III. von Bayern (2. Niederschlesisches) Nr. 47 - (10th company), based in Posen and Schrimm, V. Armee-Korps. This monogram was introduced in 1913 Füsilier-Regiment von Gersdorff (Kurhessisches) Nr. 80 stationed in Wiesbaden / Bad Homburg, XVIII. Armee-Korps Light blue shoulder straps bearing the monogram of Victoria, die Kaiserin Friedrich*, with shoulder buttons of 8th company. Handwritten name tag inside collar, "Stein". The tunic has seen very much wear and with service repairs, and notably has been used for training recruits after outbreak of war, as seen by the fieldgrey side-hooks, later added, due to shortage of fieldgrey uniforms, this was common practice, until the recruits were sent to the front. Lower hook and eye set on collar missing. The low collar and brandenburg cuffs bear a unique pattern of single Litzen, known as Altpreußische Litzen, but without centre stripe, as worn only by this regiment. Further regiments wore this pattern of litzen, but with a red centre stripe; 5. Garde-Regiment zu Fuß, and Garde-Grenadier-Regiment 5. The cuff patch is additionally piped on the three outward edges in yellow, indicating the Prussian Regiments within the Hessian XVIII. Korps. The tunic does not have an internal dressing pocket. Blue shoulder straps and yellow piped Brandenburg cuffs as worn by the non-Hessian regiments of the XVIII. A.K. The Hessian regiments wore shoulder straps and cuff flap on a regimental colour basis. The regiment wore the normal Prussian infantry helmet with the addition of a black parade plume. A very much worn tunic in still collectable condition, the rightside collar Litzen has a repair, as this had been subject to a lot of wear from the equipment straps (Tornisterriemen), nap of cloth worn on some exposed areas. Purchased by my father at an Islington arms fair about 1969. *Eldest daughter of Queen Victoria of England, and mother of Kaiser Wilhelm II. Name label, "Stein" Brandenburg cuffs, yellow piped (XVIII. A.K., etc.), with "Altpreußische" Litzen without centre stripe (unique, worn only by this regiment) Shoulder buttons, 8. Kompagnie Additional belt hooks at side added after August 1914. Old stocks of the coloured peacetime uniforms were issued to recruits until they were sent to the front. Much wear resulting from field training with full equipment The tradition of the regiment was Hessian until 1866. Re-raised 1866-67 for the Prussian Army. 3 Quote

Most likely from the Garde-Fußartillerie-Regiment, Berlin Also the original storage box for the Epaulettes, hand marked inside lid with the name of the owner "Alverdes", and I. Garnitur - i.e., "1st. best pieces" - as these were not for everyday wear, but only for special occasions when required. The were worn with buttons of the colour matching the half moons, and held by Passanten of matching red cloth overlaid with the matching braid in the Prussian colours as on edges. The Passanten were sewn onto the uniform shoulder and remained otherwise under the usual everyday shoulder pieces. "Alverdes" is listed as Seconde-Lieutenant in the 1897 Rangliste under Garde-Fußartillerie-Regiment. 3. Batterie. Not a German name. Drivers sections wore whitened equipment of infantry pattern and an infantry sidearm. As of Summer 1914 there were four standing regiments of Garde-Feldartillerie, these were all based in Potsdam and Berlin. These regiments had various coloured shoulder straps, each with its own pattern of grenade. The first regiment wore white shoulder straps, the second red, third yellow and fourth blue. The first regiment had two different patterns of grenade distiguishing the mounted batteries from the drivers sections. After the outbreak of war, the number of regiments were increased, drawing from reserves. The shoulder buttons were always without a battery number. The basic tunic cloth is a darker blue than in the photo. The tunic features Swedish cuffs as prescribed for the field artillery. All facings, collars and cuffs are black and piped in red. Buttons are gold coloured, which was always a copper colour in the Prussian Army. Note: 1st.Batterie wore a scroll on the helmet eagle: PENINSULA WATERLOO GÖHRDE 2nd Batterie was Brunswick and wore the Brunswick cockade blue/yellow, with scroll as before with addition COLBERG 1807 This set came from the estate of Herr Gerd Melosch, Hamburg. His father had served before WW1 in this regiment in Wolfenbüttel and had lived there. The name Melosch has a foreign origin and either his father or grandfather came originally from Serbia, migrated to Vienna, and later to Germany. This was long before WW1. Herr Melosch the younger, served with the Luftwaffe in WW2 as ground personnel, and he managed to escape from the Falaise Pocket in Summer of 1944 using a French civilian bicycle, which he had stolen! At the end of the war, he lay wounded in a Lazarett in Thüringen and was captured there in that condition by American forces. He survived captivity and worked after the war with the NDR Norddeutscher Rundfunk as a technician. He passed away in 2001. Around 1998, he gave me this set, saying it was from his father. After his wife died, the daughter wound up the estate, and I saw some pre-war photos of her grandfather in the coloured peacetime uniform of his regiment in Wolfenbüttel. Unfortunately, I did not get these photos, some dealers were quicker. The daughter had no interest in the family history, and was just eager to clear out the house and get it sold quickly.
