WW2 Luftschutzbunker

Recommended Posts

The remains of a WW2 Luftschutzbunker at the corner of Hogrevestrasse and Wendemuthstrasse in Hamburg-Wandsbek. The bunker was never quite completed and over 40 people took shelter here on the night of the airraids in July 1943. A direct hit entirely destroyed the bunker and all within. The remains of the bunker were still clearly visible until the early 1970s in the form of a high mound of rubble, as this was an enormous bunker. Later the ruins were covered over with earth and trees and flowers planted. This is how it looks today, a plaque in memory of the those within the bunker was errected in the mid 1990s.

This is probably the most well-known bunker in Hamburg, and was considered a problem for many years after the war. Finally in the late 1980s a solution was met. Windows were knocked through the several metre thick walls, and the interior was converted for offices. Most of the firms which have settled in the bunker are from the advertising industry, and it is now often referred to as the Mediabunker. The bunker shown is situated on the Heiligengeistfeld between the Hamburg boroughs of St. Pauli and Karolinenviertel, near U-Bahn Statiion Feldstraße.

Originally a combination of flak tower and air raid shelter for thousands of the population, three of these were built in Hamburg, three in Vienna and three in Berlin. Several of these have been demolished in time, which was an extremely difficult task.

Fruther types of bunkers are the so-called Rundbunker, a rounded tower, next pictures: in Hasselbrook and Vorsetzen near the Port, which were built around 1941.

I read L-Tower in Hamburg was demolished after the war and replaced by a building owned by T-Mobile, and  G-Tower was transformed into a nightclub with a music school and music shops.  Here is  Flakturm VI G-Tower.

They started that relatively early after the war, esp. considering there were so many homeless due to the bombings. In later years they were also used as storage facilites, some were kept maintained during the cold war period by the Katastrophenschutz (civil defence). I remember in the 1970s there was "Schnecke" on the Moorweide opposite Dammtor Station, which was a bar and discotheque, which is still there and is one of the "Rundtürme" type of bunker. Others have been recently converted into private appartments, and very expensive too. This was done by demolishing the roof, ceilings and floors all the way down and the front and rear of a bunker, and then filling it out as a new appartment block, basicly just retaining the original side walls.
