Fritz
One of the last historic films made during the Third Reich 1944/45 was to encourage the spirit of holding out and not surrendering, in memory of the besieged heroic city of Colberg, which held out against Napoleons troops until the Armistice in 1807 Joseph Goebels personally watched over the progress of the film in making. An epic film made in difficult times whilst on the brink of total collapse. Film was made in the original settings in Colberg and in Breslau - before their destruction! Das Volk steht auf! Der Sturm bricht los!
Fritz
Some background material on the making of the film: The most expensive film ever made in Germany - 2 million Reichsmarks, and using over 175.000 men
Kenny Andrew
I always thought the story of the making of Kolberg would make a great modern movie too.To think Goebels personally oversaw the making of this film ,even pulling 50,000 soldiers from active duty to film the battle scenes, all this when the Russians were advancing towards Germany. Another crazy story from WW2 that not allot of people know about.

Kenny Andrew
I also read somewhere it had the biggest cast in any movie until Gandhi was made in the 1980's
Fritz
Horst Casper played the rôle of August Neidhardt von Gneisenau, the defender of Colberg in the film. His predecessor, Géneralmajeur Ludwig Moritz de Lucadou, was played by Paul Wegener. Lucadou had not won the trust of Bürgermeister Nettelbeck and the citizens of Colberg. He spoke with a French accent and did not understand the "Platt" dialect of the region. He had also suffered a stroke, then being replaced by Gneisenau.

Gildwiller1918
Interesting story, even while the country is crumbling all around them. Seemed like a huge waste of resources. Have you heard of the WW2 German Titanic film? It was supposed to show how careless the British were, especially their officers as well as showing how capitalism led to the ships demise. This was also overseen by Goebbels, and costed nearly 4 million RM.
Kenny Andrew
Yes here is the film, from memory more people were killed on this ship when it was sunk by the RAF in 1945 than were killed on the actual Titanic.
