Fritz Posted June 24, 2016 Share Posted June 24, 2016 In 1939 an equestrian statue as a memorial for Hannoversches Dragoner-Regiment 16 was errected in Clamart-Park in Lüneburg. The bronze statue, horse and rider was removed and dismantled several years ago, as left wing protests increased. The empty base of the statue was then covered in a freese with memorial texts referring to the destruction of Guernica in the Spanish Civil War by "Faschist Forces". Pictures show the memorial as it was errected in 1939, a postwar photo and a photo taken shortly before removal of the statue. Further photos show the present condition of the remaining elements of the memorial. A further memorial for Luftwaffe Kampfgeschwader 26 for WW2, which was errected after the war, and stood for many years in the Lindenstraße in Lüneburg was also dismantled and removed several years ago due to left-wing protests, and was brought to the nearby Theodor-Körner-Kaserne in a rather hidden corner surrounded by trees and bushes. Present condition of the memorial unknown.
