Fritz
Discovered today in the Museum attic, a Luftschutz-Hausapotheke (small version for households) The box is empty, but the lid still has the large label with the details of all the contents, the manufacturer and the distributor/retailer, plus the information that the box may be sold without contents, as per § 8 of Luftschutzgesetz of 1938. Although the item was distributed from Dresden, it must have had some connection with Wandsbek. A typical and almost vital item from many wartime households. § stands for Paragraph Box is of compressed cardboard with a leather like darkblue finish, nickel plated metal fittings and a blue painted metal handle. Store dry! Manufacturer Alfred Kipping K.G., Dresden, sold by Parsifal-Apotheke, Dresden 3
Fritz
Schaffnertasche for public transport conductors - 2 examples of this were found in the attic of the Museum, they were hidden in some shelves at the back of the attic, totally full of dust, and ready for decay. These are certainly from the 1920s or 1930s, and were used by the conductors in public transport, busses, trams, etc. for many years, they were still usable till the introduction of the Euro currency, which does not fit. The coin compartments take 10 Pf. pieces, 50 Pf. and 1 Mark pieces, which are inserted at the top of each cylinder, and can be collected at the bottom, by pressing the levers at the side together, one press per coin, 3 of these are no longer operational and stuck fast, the fourth one works, but the bottom part is jammed in the open position. Doubtfull if there is anyone around nowadays, who can get the mechanisms operational again. These bags were used for decades and solid leather and construction. Used on the trams of the Hamburger Hochbahn till February 1978, the trams were then scrapped. They were still used on the boats of the Alstertouristik till the introduction of the Euro in January 2002. Some examples were converted to take the new currency, but don't look good, as the originality is spoiled. Together with it's original carrying strap and 2 small commemorative pins of the Hamburger Hochbahn depicting the underground trains. The ticket stamping apparatus of brass, which fits in the side pocket on the right is missing. Thre rear of the nickel plated coin holders bears the manufacturer name - Prof. Alfred Krauth, Eberbach/Baden, no doubt also the patent rights. Now cleaned and the leather and metal parts freshened up, function defect but still good for display. Nickel plated Münzfächer, coin compartments release operated by levers The rear of the bag is solid leather, seams with strong leather piping all round, other parts of solid brass Detail of the attachment clips (Karabinerhaken) and the two small commemorative badges of the Hamburger Hochbahn, ca. 1978 Sch
Fritz
A further Schaffnertasche, as previous lot, now awaiting restoration, one of three in posession of the Museum, two in storage, one good example in the permanent exhibition. The leather shows much more abuse than the previous example. The extras are also missing. There is some strong verdigris to some of the brass fittings inside. The leather carrying strap has a more simplified buckle than the previous example. Hidden inside the bag were a hoard of greymetal zink coins dating from 1940-1944, most in a poor state, as they had been over 80 years in contact with the leather surfaces within. A time capsule discovered after more than 80 years! More pictures to follow next week. The coin containers/dispensers on this example are all still fully functioning!
Fritz
After cleaning and restoration, the mechanical parts work perfectly. This hoard of 24 coins remained undiscovered at the bottom of the bag since the end of the war. Coins dating from 1941-1944, all 10 Pf. pieces and three 5 Pf. pieces. Most of the coins with zink oxidation. The first batch after a mild cleaning. They will never be as new again. The coins after a final cleaning.
Fritz
Update of the Museum's decorations in the exhibition of H.R.15. These represent some of the standard decorations of Prussia, as well as the personal decorations of a veteran of H.R.15, wearer unfortunately not known. Two interesting photos of Wachtmeister Schröder and his adoptive son Hans Hennings around 1909. Hans Hennings lived in Wandsbek and died just several years ago. Pictures were donated by Frau G. Hennnings (daughter of W. Schröder), who died in December 1988. It is noted that both of these horses fell in the Great War. ------------------------------------------------- Pictures from the Officers' Album, 1866-1914: 2 academic ladies, who are writing a book about the history of classical dance, visited the Museum last week asked for information and pictures of participants from the "Wandsbeker Husars" during a performance of classical dances in 1898, these were of course, exclusively officers. See digital copy of participants above. The following photos were found in the album. Some of the other participants came from other regiments. Seconde-Lieutenant v. Lattorf, 1893 Seconde-Lieutenant v. Moriz-Eichborn, 1892 Seconde-Lieutenant v. Bercken, 1891 Seconde-Lieutenant v. Löbbecke, 1894 Seconde-Lieutenant Freiherr v. Fritz
x Several photos are missing from the Officers' Album, i.e., they were never added/completed. Today, the missing photo of Rittmeister von Platen (bottom right) could be filled with a digital re-print. 6 further photos are still missing, it is hoped, that the gaps can be filled in time. There are the bright peacetime shoulder buttons of Tomback (18mm), and the toned crown buttons for the piped field (grey) uniform, normal size, 20mm, the 18mm variety for the hip-pockets and the shoulder pieces, where appropriate.

Fritz
+ Heino Schilling + The Museum has been closed since the 17. March. There is no news as to when it will re-open. The news bulletin for Wandsbek - WANDSBEK INFORMATIV - announced in the June issue the death of a member of the Bürgerverein Wandsbek Heino Schilling led guided tours of historical Wandsbek for several years. He was an expert on the history of Wandsbek and the author and poet Matthias Claudius. Heino had been ill for a longer period and gradually withdrew from his voluntary position. The tours were then called off indefinitely. It was a great shock to read that Heino passed away in April recently at the age of 63. 1
Fritz
A donation to the Museum the previous week of a Reservisten-Pfeife, not quite complete, some smaller parts are missing. This was apparently from the family or descendants of Unteroffizier Rosenberger, of whom the Museum was already in posession of his military pass book and a full portrait photo. He served in the 5. Eskadron from 1906-1909. At the outbreak of war he was transferred to Husaren-Regiment 16, and was dismissed in 1918/19 as a Leutnant der Reserve. The pipe, dismantled as donated. Some of the parts are too fragile to fit together and will best be displayed as such. Various fittings of lacquered tropical hardwood and staghorn, with a porcellain sleeve bearing the picture of Queen Wilhelmina der Niederlande The pipe bowl of porcellain with the image of Kaiser Wilhelm II., the reverse named to Husar Rosenberger Militärpaß, 1906 of Husar Karl Friedrich Josef Rosenberger, later Leutnant der Reserve, with a threequarter portrait photo Passes of the Provinzialkavallerie were always yellow (slight fading) Pass is issued as Offizier-Stellvertreter, probably a later replacement document, Rosenberger served 1914-18 with Husaren-Regiment Kaiser Franz Joseph von Österreich-Ungarn (Schleswig-Holsteinisches) Nr.16 Militärpaß, Jahresklasse 1906 des Husaren, später Leutnants der Reserve Karl Friedrich Josef Rosenberger mit einem Dreiviertelporträt. Fritz
One of the sons of Musikmeister Sippel served 1914-18 with the Regiment Wandsbek: Alte Kameraden, photo from the late 1930s, some wearing the dress of the Kyffhäuserbund Stabstrompeter Carl Otto Robert Ludewigs, born Wandsbek, 17.4.1882, copy of birth certificate dated 1938 Correspondence from the donor stating that the enclosed photo is of Stabstrompeter Peter Ludewig*, however the photo shows a uniform from a much earlier period, around 1848-1860 with a percussion rifle, and most likely not from any German state. Would be worth some uniform research, possibly Danish - or Schleswig-Holstein? Musket is a percussioned Brown Bess! *Stabstrompeter Ludewig is listed as 1877-1895 in the publication by H.W.Faerber, 1991

Fritz
Vize-Wachtmeister Karl Kähler, original cabinett photo, which was featured in the book by H.W.Faerber, 1991 A parade plume for officers. The silver sleeve seems either damaged or a replacement, Someone has put black tape around to fasten the feathers - heron (Reiher) feathers. This should be restored, but difficult to assess whether it can be removed without damaging the feathers. The silver sleeve should have an ornamental decoration to the top edge. Rare to find. Decorative Souvenir plate of Gefreiter Burgdorf, 3. Eskadron as a present to his aunt, Christmas 1901.
