leon21 Posted March 27, 2016 Share Posted March 27, 2016 On 9th Feb 1940 a Heinkel 111H with the markings of 1H+EN wing No 6853 of 5/II/KG.26 and flown by pilot Uffz H.Mayer. The aircraft damaged by a Spitfire from 602 Squadron, was forced to land at North Berwick Law, East Midlothian shortly after 12 noon, one of the crew was killed, the three others were injured and taken prisoner. Pilot Mayer managed to make a near perfect landing with the damaged aircraft, just clipping a hedge and tipping the plane on it's nose. It was repaired and taken to Turnhouse and given the RAF serial number AW117, and flown by No 1426 ( Enemy Aircraft Flight, until 10th Nov 1943 when on his approach for a landing at Polebrook, the pilot Flying Officer F.A.Barr saw the flight's captured Junkers JU88 flying towards him, steeply turning to port, the aircraft stalled, spun vertically into the ground and exploded on impact killing seven people. The same aircraft was used in the film "Combat America" a training film for the American Air Force gunner's, the film was made by American film actor, who at the time was Captain Clark Gable in July 1943.
