Fritz Posted June 13, 2016 Author Share Posted June 13, 2016 Just recently learned that Rittmeister von Hanstein (4.Eskadron) was the great uncle of an old friend of mine, Dittmar Freiherr von Hanstein. His sister, Carola von Fischer (geb.Freiin v.Hanstein), recently mentioned that to me. His father was Generalmajor Jobst Freiherr von Hanstein - previously Oberst im Generalstab and Kommandeur, Artillerie-Regiment 3. At Stalingrad he recieved the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold, and promotion to Generalmajor - and then into Soviet captivity until 1955, together with Feldmarschall Paulus. You can find him under ww2 awards.com. I think he died about 1961, his health was ruined by the long years of capitivity. Both are buried in the family grave at Hamburg-Bergedorf. Note the bar to the iron cross 2nd class Jobst Freiherr von Hanstein was on the staff of Generalfeldmarschall Paulus at Stalingrad. He had previously been Oberst and Kommandeur of Artillerie-Regiment 3 (motorisiert). Shortly before the capitulation of Stalingrad he was promoted to Generalmajor and awarded the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold. He became a prisoner of war around the 19. January 1943 as Kommandeur 3. I.D. and was not released till 1956. The years in Russia ruined his health and he died in 1962. R.I.P.
