A new post
That covers ,
The internment of the RND
In Groningen Holland ...
From the early days
After the 11th of October 1914,
On 11th October 1914, 1,500 men of the First Royal Naval Brigade arrived in Groningen. They had been deployed in early October to assist the Belgian army against German troops attacking Antwerp.
On arrival in Holland, they were interned (in accordance with International Law), in Groningen, a city in northern Holland. Behind the present-day Mesdagkliniek (the former city jail) a complete encampment was erected on the paradeground of the Rabenhauptkazerne (the local military barracks, situated opposite this prison).
The Christmas card sent from Groningen in December 1914 shows the old barracks, they were put in until the purpose built camp nicknamed,
HMS TIMBERTOWN,
Was completed,
the
card is from one William Anderson
If you look on the photo with the 3 matelots
Sitting by a round table ,
You will see william on the left,
Also the last photo marked 1280 is also him
W, Anderson the Christmas card is from collingwood
Battalion RND that was nearly wiped out at galliopli.
thanks to the
Help from Niko Van Kerckhoven
Who provided the photo
marked 1208
We can now put everything together
The last photo shows the collingwood
Memorial at blandford camp ,thank you everybody for making this possible, also thanks to
Paul Mal Cooper
For the photo of the collingwood monument,
And Menno Wielinga
And Guido Blokland
For the information in the camp
Another soul remembered
From the card he sent
And documentation
He won't be forgotten

There is a very interesting P.S To an earlier post i did on the
COLLINGWOOD DIVISION
CHRISTMAS CARD sent from GRONINGEN IN 1914,
as seen in scans 1--2
yes it was from WILLIAM ANDERSON...
we were right about him
he is s in the 3rd scan first matelot on the left at the white table ,
but he is also in the 4th scan bottom row 2nd in on the right,
BUT !I discovered today that the person sitting on his left.
bottom row 1st on the right is. William Conaty,
the reason he gets a mention is ,
written on the back of the original photo card,
is both William .Anderson
and William .Conaty ,
both came from Northshields Tyneside, 4.84 miles,
down the river from Newcastle upon Tyne,
in the east midlands England,
the 2nd to last scan is of a group in the barracks ,
the last scan is of,
William Conaty him self in the camps I.D photo,
thank you Niko Van Kerckhoven,
for finding the scan,
it really is amazing what can be found from looking at an old Christmas card,
thank you everybody ,
another soul remembered .

the last picture is of a RND SWEETHEARTS BADGE,

this I put in as a tribute to all the lads those who have been forgotten and wait to be found,

RIP LADS

P.S the 6th scan is WILLIAM CONARTY

THE 8th is WILLIAM ANDERSON
