Captured Allied tanks used by the Wehrmacht

Captured Italian Carro Armato Pesante 26/40, this was a heavy tank, unlike most other Italian tanks. This came out late in the game with only 103 produced. It had a Ansaldo 75 mm L/34 gun with two 8 mm Breda 38 machine guns. It had a speed of 25 mph on roads and 16 mph off roads. The tank design was influenced by the T-34, which led to redesigning of the body and armor. This also increased the weight drastically, which led to finding a suitable engine problematic. The Germans captured only a handful and predesignated it the Panzerkampfwagen P40 737(i), others without engines were used in static defensive positions.

Captured Russian Su-122 self propelled gun, the "122" stood for the main gun caliber, 122 mm, 638 were made between 1942-1943. Interestingly, this SP was designed around the German Sturmgeschütz III chassis, as the soviets were keen to follow the success of the German models. Only 10 were made using the German chassis before switching to the T34 chassis.

Captured Belgian Vickers light utility tractor (VLC). There were several models of this unit to include the Vickers Artillery Tractor (VAT) as well as models for the cavalry and infantry. They were mainly used to tow light artillery pieces. The captured German units were designated Artillerie Schlepper VA 601(b) in which they towed the 37mm Pak 36, and 50mm Pak 38 anti-tank guns and were also used as training vehicles.

Captured French Renault AMR 35 light tank, these were produced starting in the mid 1930s with a little over 180 made. They were quite fast and used to support the infantry during the 1940 invasion of France. In German service they were designated the Panzerspähwagen VM 701(f) and used for policing duties or training purposes. There was also another variant called the 8cm schwere Granatwefer 34 auf Panzerspahwagen AMR(35f) in which the turret was removed and fitted with a 81mm mortar with armored sides that protected the crew. This is shown in the 2nd image.

Captured Czech Škoda PA-II "Želva" or "Tortoise". Not many of these were made, but the ones that were captured mainly saw use as communication relay vehicles. The German designation for these was Panzerspahwagen Skoda PA-II(Fu) 4 räd.

Captured Czech Škoda-CKD LT vz. 35 light tank. After the Germans took over the country, 244 were seized and named Panzerkampfwagen 35(t). These were used in the Polish and French campaigns and they were also used in operation Barbarossa, in which the participated in the 4th Panzer Group's push to Leningrad. 160 tanks started the Russian invasion, 4 months later only 34 were left, most of the loses were due from a lack of spare parts and mechanical issues.

Captured Polish wz.34 Armored car. There were quite a few variants of this vehicle however about a third were armed with a Puteaux SP-18/21 37 mm gun, while the others had the 7.92 mm (0.3 in) Hotchkiss wz.25 machine-guns. The weaponry and poor armor ensured that most were lost during the Polish Campaign, surviving units captured by the Germans were used for police and anti-partisan operations.

British A9 Cruiser Mk.I, many of these were captured after the evacuation at Dunkirk, more were sent to bolster Greece and all were lost there as well. The A9 did not hold up well against the German 37mm gun and Panzer III tanks.

Captured Russian T-26 tank that was modified by the Germans to be tank destroyers. Most were modified to accommodate a 76.2mm gun, but it seems most conversions were done in the field and with what was on hand.

Captured Russian T-20 Komsomolets, which was originally an armored tractor designed to tow artillery pieces. They were made from 1937 to 1941 with over 4,000 produced. Later in the war the Russians converted some to tank destroyers. Captured German versions continued to use them as artillery tractors, however some were converted to carry the PAK 36/37 gun, which were designated German 3,7 cm PAK36/37 auf artillerie schlepper 603(r), an example is shown in the last image.

Captured French Char B1 heavy tank converted and designated the 10.5 cm leFH 18/3 (Sf.) auf Geschützwagen B2(f), 16 of these tanks were made into SP's with a crew of 5. From what I have read, these were not very mechanically reliable vehicles and did not go very fast, eventually most were delegated for training replacement crews.

Captured Russian BA-3 Armored Car, these were made up till 1935 when an improved model the BA-6 came out. Both models were very similar in design with about 650 being produced. The BA-3 had a door at the rear while the BA-6 did not, and for their time, they were fairly well armored.

Captured Russian BA-11 armored car, only 17 were made and all were lost during the war. These vehicles did not perform well off road due to weight and lack of all wheel drive. These were equipped with a 45mm main gun and had 13mm of armor.
