sommewalker
WW1 TRENCH ART,the phrase "trench art " covers a wide range of things made, during and after a war, and notably it comes to mindin most people ,in connection with WW1,,...and this little tobacco ? boxcomes within that area,it has a nice carved lid,and on one edge of the box is carved "YPRES"and on the other is carved "REMY"REMY or REMY sidings as it was known, was home to a cluster of casualty clearing stations,on the Ypres salient, during ww1 from 1915 until 1920see linkhttp://www.lijssenthoek.be/en/page/160/visitor-centre.htmlcasualty clearing stations were normally based closeto a railway ,for obvious reasons,so in all probability the box was made by some one when they were there or, when they were on convalescence leave in blighty,so often its the small things that can illustrate ,how people lived and survived ,through such a turbulent time in our history.
