Thought i would mix it up a bit, picked this up about a year ago, me and a friend found a cache of old film props and gear, included was about a dozen of these soft caps. It came with everything minus the badge. The sweatband has obviously been replaced, however everything else is very nice condition. These items are quite hard to find in the US. I picked the suffolk badge because that's where I used to live while in the UK.

Thanks Kenny  ,  Excellent info on brodie helmets .

Any  ideas on the SS on the inside of the helmet ?   And do you think the net is original

Thanks

Hi Mac, the net looks original however in this case I think the helmet would look better without the net as it hides the nice decal. Never came across the SS before, hopefully Colin or some of the others will know

Welcome MacMac, could be the soldiers initials it's hard to say or the initials of a unit. yes I've seen helmets at high prices a lot depends on condition

whether it's a rare maker stamp mark or an early made WW1 helmet, rare Regiment insignias, also  help to push the prices up. It's all down to what a

buyer is willing to pay for a certain helmet he has not got in his collection, personally I think a lot are well over priced.

The helmet you have is a nice looking helmet, any chance of  a closer photo of the helmet makers mark.

Here is yet another one of my WW1 Helmets, this one is a rimmed version, the makers stamp was partially obscured, and read as "S 64" but after a little more sanding I got a "FS 64" FS=Thomas Firth & Sons Ltd of Sheffield. The chin strap mount have seen better days, in which one is broken and the other has been repaired.

Unusual repair job to the chin strap mount any idea when this was done, does it look like a period repair.

That is the way I got the helmet, no other information. The repair looks to be old, it could be a field repair or something done after the war.

  • 4 weeks later...

Can anyone please help with an ID on this Liner?

The helmet itself appears to be a MK2 and has the following stamp 7 3/4 FH II 1941

I have looked through lists of all the known makers but cannot find anything related to FH.

There are no other markings on the Brodie itself or any part of the liner.

Could this be a rarer manufacture of liner or perhaps a commonwealth type?

It could be made by one of the unknown smaller manufacturers, I've not seen that mark before, could you post a photo of the whole of the

inside of the helmet for me please.

isn't "FH" Failsworth Hats?

Thanks for reply 🙂

Good shout, sounds probable - one of the lesser known makers?

Thanks again.

Wasn't sure they made liners, if they did it could well be. Failsworth Hats Ltd., I  know during the war years the Company

was actively employed in Ministry of Supply work making headgear for the forces, like hand crafted flying helmets for the

RAF, Nurses hats and some Aircraft parts, they also made special equipment for Commando Frogmen.

I am not sure? my knowledge is limited.

Ive googled Failsworth Hats and came across some very smart peaky blinder looking caps 😉

Established 1903 so more than likely it could be, another name to add to the list 😁
