41/47 Royal Tank Regiment (Oldham)

I have relatives buried at Chadderton Cemetery too, Leon. Small world. :)

If they leave the headstone at the grave, then hopefully it should only require the placing of a new concrete base, and the headstone on top of that. It sounds strange for the ground to have subsided though. Nobody has been added to the grave since my Grandfather, 40 years ago.

Hi all.

I am trying to find out about my late fathers' wartime battles. He was an Oldham TA recruit, living in Ely Street and joined the 41st Bn RTC in Feb 1939, servi7890903. Looking at his records so far (where legible), he attended the Ministry of Labour Training centre in Cardiff, Elstead & Knaresborough until Nov 1941, becoming a Driver Mechanic . He was posted to the Middle East in May 1942 but I think he was soon injured somehow - admitted CRS 8LFA & SOS to XII, no idea what this means. He was then posted a week later to his unit 41 RTR then to 44 RTR in Dec 1942 but with further hospital visits (he did tell me he was 'blown up' three times, with crew fatalities). After El Alamein, he embarked fo Sicily with the 'Husky Force', moving from the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force to the British North Africa Force. I think he went on to Italy - he told me he helped to catch some Italian generals, where, I don't know. He embarked back to Britain Jan 1944 then on to North West Europe in June. Further hospitalisation then a move to the R.E.M.E. on tank recovery in Aug 1944. Released from B.O.A.R. Oct 1945 and came home. So, quite a journey. My question is in which battles is he likely to have fought and are there any books or archives to be recommended. Cheers

It is good to see the photos and programme of HM the Queen's visit to Oldham posted in 2018. Shame they were not credited or notes given. For accuracy my father Major GV Stephenson is shown escorting Her Majesty. He later commanded the 40th/41st 1957-1959. More information is on the 41st/47th Royal Tank Regiment  facebook  https://www.facebook.com/groups/1853352058327512/

Hi all, I am a new member I stumbled on this forum whilst searching for in formation on my Grandfather regarding his military service during the second world war. I have tried the usual places- forces war records, fold 3, national archives without success. I’m hoping someone here can help. According to the 1939 census my Grandfather’s occupation was a Lance Corporal in the Royal Tank Regiment and as he lived in Royton at the time I am assuming it would have been with the ‘41st Oldham’. There is also his service number but a piece of tape is partially obscuring the first digit! (Image attached) My Grandfathers name was John Green according to my father he served in north Africa and was discharged on medical grounds after being wounded. Any help or advice anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance.

Welcome to the Forum Andy, it's possible your grandfather may have served in the 41st or 47th Royal Tank Regiments

as both saw service in North Africa. Have you tried to find his pension records or any books on the 2 regiments?

Hi Leon, thanks for the welcome and the advice. I haven’t tried either of your suggestions but I will do, I believe there was some kind of mix up with his army pension as he didn’t receive it until a number of years after he should have! My father said my Grandad didn’t know he was entitled to one until a mate he served with asked if he was getting his army pension! Thanks again!

I think his missing service number is a 3 or 8 as it should be 7 digits long.
