I've been meaning to post these photo's of Kiel harbour before now, but just got round to it. I think they were

taken in the 1920s or very early 30s.

In the 1st photo at the top are two tall ships, were these navy training ships? also there are two warships at

anchor one behind the tall ships and one to the right. can't make out what type they are.?post-3823-0-50027500-1363181681_thumb.jpgpost-3823-0-93074200-1363181796_thumb.jpgpost-3823-0-92698900-1363181840_thumb.jpgpost-3823-0-02099700-1363181882_thumb.jpgpost-3823-0-97831300-1363181924_thumb.jpg

Have now identified the tall ship in 2nd photo as the Gorch Fock a 3 masted steel barque. Originally built as a

school ship for the German Reichsmarine in 1933, built in Hamburg by Blohm & Voss the first of 4 to be built.

Here sister ships were the Horst Wessel launched in 1936, the Albert Leo Schlageter launched 1937, and the

Mircea launched in 1938. A fifth was started but never finished as production was given over to U-Boats instead.

Here's another photo of the Gorch Fock and a aerial photo of Kiel Harbour in 1912.post-3823-0-34252100-1363380977_thumb.jpgpost-3823-0-05465900-1363381003_thumb.jpg

Here's a photo of the 3 Pre-Dreadnoughts of the German Navy c1930, they were the ( Schliesen - Hessen - and

the Schleswig-Holstein. All had been modernized from 1925 to 1927 and returned to service.

The Schleswig-Holstein became the Flagship of the Navy from 1927 to 1935. Germany had already begun rearming

with 2 Pocket Battleships already completed when Hitler came to power but that was the extent of Germanys

Capital ship strength in 1933.

PS the map lists Admiral Graf Spee as capsized, should be Admiral Scheer.
